Fedora's about new features and testing how do they work together with other parts of the system. Releasing less new features would actually be anti-Fedora :D
Edit
I personally found it outrageous someone actually proposed names which also reference diseases (Marfan, Asperger, Tourette). I'm sure the proponent was thinking about the persons who first described these diseases, or something along those lines, rather than the illnesses themselves. Also of the mythic beast crowd, the only one I could "digest" was Dragicorn... And that comes from one of the voters on the Werewolf name for F8, i.e, me. I thought about the Chingachgook (or whatever is spelled like) name as well, but seriously: Are we the last of our kind? (hero from Last of the Mohicans), and please who could have ever proposed the 'Chupacabra' aberration? (sends chills down my spine to even think about a Fedora release named THAT), heck even Dracula would have been better! With all and Copyright infringement! Or to avoid that, "Nosferatu", but... Do we see Linux (particularly Fedora) as a Life Sucking endeavor*?... Don't answer :D

Doesn't matter much to me, because most people just use the number anyway. That said...
"Moonshine" was a pretty good name.
"Werewolf" is bloody stupid. Might as well call it "Wizard". I don't know why. Codenaming a distro "Werewolf" just seems so childish.
Sulphur? Come on. The rest of those sucked. Chupacabra, ironically, seems to have been added as a joke but did well; for those of you who are uninformed, "Chupacabra" is a Cryptid (animal of unconfirmed reality, like Nessie and Sasquatch). The name literally translates to "goat-sucker."
If I had a distro? Well, I think I'd parody the whole codename thing and make my codenames cumbersomely long and even nonsensical. Something like "[Tom's Clever Distro Name] 1.0 - If I Had a Styrofoam Canoe Small Enough to Fit in the Bathtub, I'd Call Myself Edward Teach and Name the Boat 'Queen Anne's Revenge'".

I'm not exactly sure what the "official" goals of the Fedora project are (besides "make a solid distro"), but I'm sure that popularity on distrowatch is the last thing that enters into the minds of the devs.

Nope, RH marketing is not involved, but rather the developers get to choose and propose a name in the -devel list, then a selection is approved and run through Legal for clearance, and then the list is published for voting at the main www.fedoraproject.org site.

I've just spent the last five years teaching 60+ year olds to handle their first computers.
One of the things I've found it necessary to say to them (only half tongue in cheek) is to be very wary about the sense of humour and communication skills of people who spend too much time working with computers!
I'm prepared to duck under the table now in case the flak starts flying.
But I do think you could use the the proposed naming of Fedora 9 as a very good illustration of the point.

General Zod in the Superman film was on Luna at one point, hence the tie-in to moonshine.
Moonlight supposedly triggers the change for Werewolves.
A werewolf is a mythical thing, hence the tie-in to vampires, chupacabra.....et&c.

That's awesome, I love Cat Power and that's the first thing I thought of when I read "Bathysphere" (although I thought it was cover she did...). They could've picked some better ones, like "He-War" or "Crossbones Style" (which would lead to some pretty sweet logos/artwork for the desktop :D )

Many Furries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furry_fandom) have one of those disorders.
That's just creepy, are there furries amongst the fedora developers?! :p

Sometimes I really wonder where they come up with these release names. But all in all, it doesn't really matter to me. It's the community, the software, the freedom, and the sponsorship and commitment that keeps me coming back. Call it whatever... I'll just smile at whatever it's called. ;)

I really like gunpowder. And that fits all the silly criteria, right? You should submit that one when it's time.

Dan, don't quit your day job there as community manager, the comedy still needs some work.
I don't know about the code names for Fedora 9 too much but I would like to suggest a new tag line for Fedora 9, "Fedora 9, because Pulseaudio mostly works now..." Doh.

Gunpowder would be kind of cool, I guess. But I like the above poster's comment about how the names have been "forgettable" - that about sums it up perfectly. With the exception of Moonshine, I haven't been impressed by any of them.
Whether the codename for Fedora 9 sucks or rules all of creation, I think most of us will call it Fedora 9 anyway. Maybe that should be the "codename." :p Now that I think of it, I wonder what the devs refer to Fedora 8 as. I'm guessing it's not the lycanthrope. So what's the point of the codenames? Getting Diggs?
EDIT: come to think of it, most distros have absolutely stupid codenames; thankfully some just eschew the whole codename ruse (what is this, a military operation? - one of these days I'm going to hear about a distro release codenamed "Desert Storm"). Not naming names, but... there's a certain popular distro that has the stupidest naming convention ever.
(Rant over.)

Ouch! Not that I disagree...
By the way, I think the Fedora names need a whole new approach. Something that will make people want to install it just to see if the name really has something to do with the distro. Here are my suggestions:
"Free Pizza"
"Hot Babes"
"All-you-can-eat Nachos"
"$50 Rebate!"
"Loads of Sex"
"Oatmeal"

I really like gunpowder. And that fits all the silly criteria, right? You should submit that one when it's time.
Actually it doesn't fit the "is-a" relationship criteria.
Sulphur is-an element; so anything element in the periodic table could be the F10 name.
sulphur (as a verb) is-a means of preservation ["These dried fruits are sulphured"], so "freeze", , "freeze-dry" "smoke" and "salt" are valid verb names for F10.
sulphur is-a pesticide; ...
Sulphur is-a town in Louisiana and Oklahoma; ...
Sulphur is-a type of butterfly; ...
Sulphur is-a Norwegian Band; ...
....
Pesticides seem like a poor choice and I'm still nauseated w/ the balloons theme - so I' mnot about to choose butterflies.
"smoke", "nitrogen", "boron" ... OK but ....
Town names from Louisiana & Oklahoma are legit ... "Delta", "Hackberry", "Waterproof", "Laplace", "Grosse Tete" ... ."Broken Arrow", "Corn", "Fort Coffee", "Jet", "Oologah", "Optima", "Okay", "Red Oak", "Tenkiller", "Tushka", "Walnut", "Zeb".
I rather like "Hackberry", but it will be a PITA to select a name for F11.

Actually it doesn't fit the "is-a" relationship criteria.
Keeping in mind that this is about as important as a bunch of girl scouts debating whether we should legislate for less glue to hold the last toilet paper square to the roll ... :)
The "n to n+1 is-a" relationship is pretty darn vague and they didn't state the order. And if is-a is as strict as you say, then how the heck is Moonshine related to Werewolf?
Still, to use is-a:
Sulphur is-a constituent of gunpowder
Sulphur is-a isotope of itself
Sulphur is-a constituent of Galena; Epsom; Glutathione
Genesis is-a world-renowned text that mentions Sulphur
Brimstone is-a alternative name for Sulphur
Claus is-a process to extract Sulphur
It's not like I particularly care, but gunpowder still looks OK to me.
And Hackberry is-a rhyme for Blackberry.
Now, let me get back to more serious matters like whether rate at which ice forms in my freezer will impinge on my needed capacity to store Popsicles.

:D There are always some people who'll think that's appropriate! Of course, there's also a number of attractive birds and plants who are named for the pale yellow color of sulphur. It will be interesting to see what our graphics folks come up with on this one and at least computers haven't yet based anything on our sense of smell, so we're lucky this time.

Sulfur is almost odorless.
Sulfur-dioxide stinks and hydrogen-disulfide is the rotten-egg smell.
"sulfur water" is caused by bacteria in wells that use sulfur (no oxygen present) to oxidize iron. Alternatively surface water with rotting organic matter releases a not of H2S from bacterial metabolism.

Far less-so I should hope.
The "n to n+1 is-a" relationship is pretty darn vague and they didn't state the order. And if is-a is as strict as you say, then how the heck is Moonshine related to Werewolf?
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/Names
"Werewolf" and "Moonshine" are movie titles.
Still, to use is-a:
Sulphur is-a constituent of gunpowder
Sulphur is-a isotope of itself
Sulphur is-a constituent of Galena; Epsom; Glutathione
Genesis is-a world-renowned text that mentions Sulphur
Brimstone is-a alternative name for Sulphur
Claus is-a process to extract Sulphur
You obviously can't use compound relationship like "is-a constitiuent" or "is mentioned in a book" or "is-a word"; that's just too easy. The "is-a" must be a definition;
Sulphur isn't an isotope of itself; you could say sulfur-36 is an isotope of sulphur but that doesn't help.
sulphur is town
sulphur is an element
sulphur is a butterfly
sulphur is a pesticide
Sulphur is a band
In your attempt only brimstone has a chance.
The relationships go like this:
Codename(N) is-a 'XXX'; and Codename(N+1) is-a 'XXX', but Codename(N+2) is-NOT-a 'XXX'. For some specific 'XXX'.
---
Hey, just a minute here - I believe that "Sulphur" is an invalid successor codename to "Werewolf". They state sulphur is a mythical cure for lycanthropy, but "is a cure" isn't a valid valid relationship and "Werewolf" isn't a cure for anything.
Can we recall the F9 name ?

Since I left Plumtree, down in Tennessee, it's the first time I've been warm."

Moonshine is-a name of a movie, which was the relationship to Werewolf. How arbitrary can you get? At this point I declare the silly rules aren't even self consistent. Name of is OK, but constituent of isn't?
Make up whatever names you want, people. I think I'll stick to F10. :)
