Hi, i am a complete n00b when it comes to Linux/Fedora - however, after much searching and browsing this forum, i have found the following URL to be absolutely fantastic!!

http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f8.html

I have been able to install audio streaming from web radio sites (BBC etc)
View DVD videos
Edit my original Windows (Photoshop) PSD files with GIMP <---- that alone makes me happy :)
view and edit my old windows HDD files!!! (windows XP home set as a slave with NTF partitions)

I encourage you to look and digest and go through the steps 1 by 1 !!!!!

Thank you very much for this great support forum!! ;)

it's a known site but it's good to hear it from newcomers ;)

Thanks for the welcome :)
I have been experimenting for a few weeks and was about to give up, however, after re-installing F8 and going through the steps outlined in the above URL, i "finally" got it!! - hahaha!!
What surprised me more than anything else though was that GIMP could open and edit my Photoshop CS2 files ?!?

I will say that the only DVD software that works correctly for "me" is VLC, which is fabulously outlined as well above.

Streaming web based radio was also of importance to me as i have no TV or radio. That was in fact the biggest problem i had, it took me weeks, but by following the instructions given, it worked straight away - lol!!

My email works, i can use Skype, i can edit my PSD files, i can stream audio/video, what more can a n00b want??

Thanks again :)

sink your teeth into compiz fusion :D

good to hear all is okay ;) and don't worry about messing up your install ;) it will happen a load of times before you get it right :p (i'm at something like 20 complete reinstalls and counting :D but i'm getting to a point were i will soon be making guides and complete installation stuff ;))

keep on messing and keep on reading these forums and you will pick up a LOT

oh and sharing your info like you did is awesome work to ;)

wow - that compiz-fusion looks really cool ;)
i doubt i am able to install just yet as i am still getting to grips with F8.
It looks outstanding as far as effects are concerned, but that is not what i am after just yet ;)
Although..... i do admit it is coooool !!

However, i do really appreciate your....... comments - lol

I am actually really impressed with F8 so far - after a lot of patient browsing and just not giving up, i think that i have finally found something that really and truly is better than M$ !!

As for sharing my "info", i guess thats what its all about ? I only hope that what ever small contribution i can make will help..... who knows :)

I am a web designer and have been for a few years, but have used M$ and M$ products all this time. I do have a licensed version of XP Home of course and Photoshop etc, however, as mentioned above i am really impressed with GIMP. The interface is "nearly" the same as PS, which makes it so easy to learn. The only problem i have is finding a "Flash software" for Linux? - I need software that can make FLV/SWF files etc ?

Any suggestions would be greatly received ;)

You really haven't asked a support question so 'Installation Help' is the wrong place for your enthusiastic post about this great distro. It belongs in Fedora Focus.... moving :)

Just go to adobe.com, click on get Flash, install the yum repository, choose open with: "system-install-packages" to install it (it will complain that the file is not signed, install anyway), open pirut (add/remove software in your menu) and in the search tab enter "flash-plugin", if you are using 32-bits Fedora (i386) that's all you need to do, if you are running 64-bits Fedora, that's probably all you need to do as well (it was just this weekend when we installed F8 x86_64 from scratch), if it doesn't work, just make sure you have nspluginwrapper installed (both i386 and x86_64 versions of it) and run this command in a terminal window as root:

su -
password:
mozilla-pluign-config -i /usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so

That should be it. Restart your browser, and enjoy.
