I could start by saying USB ADSL Modems are rubbish and to get a modem/router with ethernet, but that is not what you want to hear.
I went ADSL at the time when BT had registration targets before they would enable ADSL in the exchange. My village was close, and the day they reduced the targets we were in. At that time no ISP was giving free modems, so the only option was to buy my own router and the only choice was ethernet at that time.
Many linux users have avoided USB modems, partly due to difficulty getting such things to work, and more so because many of us run home networks and want to have more than one computer connected at a time.
My brother in law used to have a speedtouch, until I gave him my non-wireless router. If he still has it, I will see if I can borrow it. My gut instinct is that it is just USBserial, but I think I need to have a play.
These type of questions seem to be quite common from new linux users, and there is a knowledge gap because more experienced users avoid such hardware. It may be good to try to close the gap.

trigpoint,
you are right but i want to say the following ,
am having laptop and i have 2 types of modems (both are speed touch ) one is usb and another is ethernet , configuration of the ethernet is easy and i successed in that ,for the usb i have still failed to do that in linux ,
am still trying to do that because in some cases the power will shut down and in this case ethernet modem will get down and disconnected,
but in the case of usb it will not
and this is the only disadvantage i have found in ethernet modems

I hadn't thought of that one
However power cuts, of more than a few seconds, are extremely rare.
Long enough that my linksys router doesn't come back on because it has a soft power switch which needs pressing after the mains comes back, making it useless if I'm not there. Don't know what possessed them to put a switch on at all, routers are meant to be on 24/7.
I also wonder if there is any battery backup on the ADSL equipment at the exchange. I would imagine the only requirement is to maintain PSTN services.
