Hello to all. I am new to the forums and I am looking to receive help with my OLD IBM thinkpad laptop. The specs are currently unknown as I received it from my cousin. It was running Windows 2000 and I decided to put linux on it. There are a few things I know about it:
It is a Pentium 3 with speed of 700MHz I believe, 12GB HDD, 256MB of ram.
My problem is this: Having installed fedora 8, I can not connect through ethernet and I do not believe there is a wireless card installed (try and rememebr it is an ancient laptop). I am also unaware if any other drivers are undetected as fedora linux is an entirely new operating system to me. I am more of a Windows XP user (vista sux). I appreciate any help that I can receive. I have tried other forums and I didn't get far after 4 posts.
I do not believe I mentioned that it was the KDE version of Fedora 8.

Do this and paste the output here. Also, do you know the model number of the laptop? A Thinkpad ____? It might be on the bottom or something? On a service tag or perhaps even "engraved" into the laptop itself.

lspci | grep Ethernet
Oh, and welcome to Fedora and Linux! :)

Ok. I typed both commands and I only got a response for the Ethernet card :\. It said:
00:03.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c556B CardBus [Tornado] (rev 20)

Type "modprobe 3c59x " and see what it says.

This needs to be done as root, too. So like Blitzo said:
su -
modprobe 3c59x

Nothing happened.

I think I think the driver MAY have been installed. The problem could be getting it to connect through a router or through any lan/pan connection.

Hmm, well the driver should be installed. Try going to system>administration>network and see if any devices are listed.

There apparently is something listed. The description of the hardware is 3Com Corporation 3c5. I guess it has been installed. Can you guys help me get it working then? I connected a cable last time and I still didn't get connection.

Connect the cable again and see if anythings changed? Hehe. Do you have NetworkManager running? System->Administration->Services. The boxed for NetworkManager and NetworkManagerDispatch should be checked. If you highlight them the status pane to the right should say they're running. Is that the case? If so click the NetworkManager icon in the taskbar and make sure it's on Wired Network. What does that do?

Network manager is checked. Network manager dispatcher is not checked.
