Hi Everyone,

anyone else having a problem getting ATI to work after upgrading to rawhide?( I have a FireGL card) When I reboot after upgrading, my system freezes as it enters GDM. The mouse cursor is formed and responsive to the mouse but the screen is all fritzed out and the keyboard is locked.

It I enter the system at runlevel 3 and change the driver to "vesa" i can get in just fine but with poor screen resolution. I have the newest kernel so the fglrx/livna kmod will not work but previously i had used the Geode or Radeon drivers just fine. Changing xorg.conf to either "Geode" or "radeon" however" results in the same locking up that I see above.

Is this something goofy with the newest version of Xorg? Do you think my best bet is to wait for some updates or to downgrade kernel and other packages?

would appreciate a word.

Hi,

Xorg is under a lot of churn right now in rawhide. This was forewarned in

man.... I hope I don't get the "honors" on this one. For anyone else - the answer is pretty clear - don't yet upgrade to Rawhide if you need good driver coverage, or protect yourself by following the link above which links to this command:

DEAR SHORT ATTENTION SPAN PEOPLE:

% sudo sed -i -e '/^\[main\]/ a exclude=xorg-*' /etc/yum.conf

Run that line to opt out of the disaster. Thank you for your time.

thanks for the link Rahul.

Wow! I feel like such a tool......

I've been limping along on a system that has poor resolution waiting for a new version of X to come along and fix my problem. Every so often I will play with the xorg.conf file and, upon starting X get my system to freeze using "ati" "flglrx" or "radeon."

I don't know why i didn't realize this earlier but the new version of X is trying to get away with the xorg.conf file. When I got rid of my xorg.conf file (moved to *.bak) and restart X - BAM! - perfect recognition of screen resolution and pretty decent 3D acceleration as well.

KDE 4.0 has some troubles (konqueror freezes my system) but this was the first time I got to try it out.

Fantastic work all around. I think the new X server/ RandR combination will be a real boon to most of us out here in Linux land. Fantastic work!
