I need to install, specifically, Red Hat 9 onto a Dell Dimension 5150.
I realize there are much newer releases out there, however, there is some work needed on this specific OS.
I have attempted to install from the DVD image and it does not see my parallel IDE drives.
My Windows XP running on the same system reports a 82801G ICH7 Ultra ATA Storage Controller. I do not understand how to obtain drivers for this type of controller. Can anyone point me to them or at least some documentation on how to accomplish this? I suspect I need to assemble some sort of driver disk to use during the installation, however, I am unable to find any drive resource specifically for Red Hat 9.
Thanks for any help!

RH9 is so old it is unlikely that you will find any support on hardware that new. Choices are either to run a current OS or run vintage hardware. I do not believe that even RedHat supports RH9 any more.

They do not. It was supported by the legacy project until about a year ago. However, when the legacy project went Tango Uniform ... so did the last remaining support for RH9.

Thanks for the replies.
All makes sense.
A friend here suggested that the limitation may be based on what which pentium processor Socket of the PC in use. If that is the case, as my current machine is using a 945 Socket, wondering if it would be possible to use a 775 Socket based system or would I need to regress down to a 478?
I've looked on http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl for hardware compatibility, as indicated in the installation guide. This link redirects to a search pge on http://hardware.redhat.com.
The nomenclature being used there is unfamiliar. How does the "Red Hat Enterprise Version" correspond to the old releases schedule (e.g. Red Hat 9)?
On to Plan B.... buy an old used PC that will run Red Hat 9 then. Glad to have craiglist.
Comments appreciated.

I need to run it straight up on a PC to interface with a hardware development platform.

RH9 is roughly equivalent to RHEL3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux#Variants

RH9 is a free community distribution, as far as I know. From looking at the wiki article referenced above, it appears the equivalent RHEL3 was the commerical version buys with the phoen support.

All documentation for RH9 is still available from Rehat here. https://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/
