hi all. after a recent update my graphics card doesn't seem to be working properly (no hardware accelerated 3d). so i tried reinstalling the proprietary drivers from livna and get the following error,

kmod-nvidia-96xx-2.6.23.9-85.fc8 - 96.43.01-19.lvn8.x86_64
FATAL: Could not open '/boot/System.map-2.6.23.9-85.fc8': No such file or directory

what do you think? many thanks.

fedora 8
2.6.23.8-63.fc8
gnome 2.20.2
amd 64 x2
bfg nvidia 8500

Hello:
Try removing your kmod-nvidia drivers completely. using yum.

Then install the proper kmod-nvidia version (as your new card is supported by the latest drivers)
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/169.07/README/appendix-a.html

from livna the kmod-nvidia-169.07 package

Hello:
Have you updated to the latest official kernel release ?
/boot/System.map-2.6.23.9-85.fc8': No such file or directory
System.map-2.6.23.9-85.fc8 should be installed with the 2.6.23.9-85.fc8 kernel

yum update kernel kernel-devel

once that is complete, reboot to the latest kernel and then install
the proper driver package from livna for your new card.
Keep in mind that the kernel-mods have to match your kernel.

Okay ... 20 questions it is ...

Open a terminal and log in as root and type and enter
yum clean metadata
yum clean dbcache

then type and post the output of
yum list | grep kernel

and

Hello:

Okay, you have the latest kernel installed.
kernel-2.6.23.9-85.fc8

You have to reboot and select the kernel-2.6.23.9-85.fc8 kernel from Grub and boot using that kernel.

are you dual-booting? if so grub maybe booting to fast for you to notice, there is a package you can download to change the grub boot. by going to yum CLI an typing in

su -
yum -y install system-config-boot

Hello:
It could be that your kernel was not installed completely ?
In your /boot do you have :
config-2.6.23.9-85.fc8
initrd-2.6.23.9-85.fc8.img
System.map-2.6.23.9-85.fc8
vmlinuz-2.6.23.9-85.fc8

If you have them all there, then you can edit your /boot/grub/grub.conf file to add an entry for the latest kernel if it is missing.

Hello:
Well it looks as though the kernel was not installed correctly / completely ?

If you have not already done so, install yumex (gui front end for yum)

yum -y install yumex

when it's complete you will find it under Applications / System Tools / Yum Extender

Launch Yumex and choose installed, then select the 2.6.23.9-85.fc8 kernel and the 2.6.23.9-85.fc8 kernel-devel and remove them.

Close yumex
then open a terminal and log in as root and once again do a
yum clean metadata
yum clean dbcache

then try
yum update kernel kernel-devel

and hopefully it installs correctly

well after spending about 8 hours on this i'm unable to get the proprietary drivers to work properly. i guess i can live without 3d for the moment and have decided to go on. again thanks for your time.

alright damn it, the patriots are coming on and i must watch them!

since livna doesn't want to play nice with me here's what i did.

get the latest nvidia driver at
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

as root at terminal:
init 3

install the driver. (i first had to yum install gcc)
say yes to everything including selling your soul

init 5

screw with various settings in mplayer that i don't understand until the hiccups go away.

watch pats in one hour!

i'm sure more problems will creep up, but for the moment i can watch tv on my linux box.

:-)

thanks all for your help!
