i have recently performed a clean install of fedora 8 on to a Compaq armada m700 laptop.
it is definitely not the fastest computer but using XFCE makes it very useable.

now to my question
How do i enable the 'dri' drivers, 'mach64_dri.so'? so direct rendering would reply with :yes

from the 'xorg.conf' file i can see the computer is using the standard 'ati' driver
I don't know how to change the drivers from one to the other

Could someone please point me in the right direction?

I have done a bit more digging and have discovered that 'drm' was not installed, solved with 'modprobe drm' and more importantly a 'mach64.ko' needs to be added.
I can not find 'mach64.ko' anywhere.
Where is it?
Has it disappeared?
Does any one know?

here is a portion of the 'xorg.0.log'

Update to my previous post - noticed this in the list for video drivers
'Display Settings -> Hardware -> Video Card Configure'.
A driver called 'mach64 - Vendor-supplied driver for mach64 cards'

does any one have any info about this driver?

I changed from the 'ati' driver to the 'mach64', glxgears has gone from 118fps to 137fps
direct rendering is still not working. Do i have to manually change settings in 'xorg.conf', if so any suggestions as to what needs changed.
