Whether you can upgrade your processor depends entirely in the socket it has. If you have a socket 754 processor the you are out of luck because there are no dual core processors for that platform (that is my case with my desktop). If your processor has socket 939 then chances are you can upgrade because dual core processors for 939 do exist; the problem would be to find them (perhaps second hand, or, wait, I saw some at Frys). Finally if your processor uses the AM2 socket then you can upgrade it for sure because those are readily available.

As far as Linux is concerned you won't find problems upgrading, the problem would lie in your Motherboard but should that be the case a BIOS update would solve the problem (read mobo's manual).

Depending on how old a version you are running, the worst you might have to do is switch kernels(pre FC6?). A non smp kernel will still run on a dual core machine. You would just have to install the smp kernel. Later versions (FC6 and later?) use the same kernel for smp and non smp. Newegg still had some 939 X2s that last time I checked.

Good Luck

i am using an AM2 Athlon 64 x2 6000+ cpu, and it runs great. if you need any help picking out a new proc (or other hardware) i'm happy to help. you should try looking at newegg.com, thats where i got mine.
