Download the fedora-release package then go yum -y upgrade.

While this is unsupported I'm doing it now and I've just got to clean up some packages first then it should work.

I too am trying it for the first time. My terminal has been scrolling at 60MPH for the last 30 minutes processing deps so it is doing something  I figure if I FUBAR my F7 no harm done and I always wanted to try the upgrade path. I will also jump on the x64 torrent when this is done as I want to convert from 32 to 64 bit this go-round. I will be doing a fresh install on that alongside this 32 bit install (if I dont F this one up) until I get 64 running smoothly. Then I will trash this partition and install something else. Will check back after the upgrade is done and let you know how it went. I suspect a few hours though.

Anyone got this "yum -y upgrade" to work?

Or does anyone know alternative way to upgrage without cd/dvd?

I can't afford to lose stability, but somehow am appealed to get 8 running...

i having this problem when i try to install fedora-release :S

I had the same exact problem, but I am having success by following these steps:

I downloaded the FC8 release and notes package independently.

http://www.ioncannon.net/system-administration/99/upgrade-fc5-to-fc6-with-yum/

The dependencies resolved and the upgrade is running now, looks to be an hour or so.

Your mileage may vary.

I've got no error yet. Make sure you do a yum clean all before you start the upgrade process.

I used rpm -Uvh fedora-release-8.3.rpm

I updated my F7 i386 install without to much trouble , I had to remove a few orphans first to sort out unfulfilled deps i.e compiz-fusion , after updating I recommend checking for problems with these commands

yum install yum-utils
package-cleanup --problems

if there are any you will need to manually satisfy any missing deps

package-cleanup --dupes

if you have any run

package-cleanup --cleandupes

Here's what I have done so far..

downloaded
http://ftp.crc.dk/fedora/linux/releases/8/Everything/i386/os/Packages/fedora-release-8-3.noarch.rpm
http://ftp.crc.dk/fedora/linux/releases/8/Everything/i386/os/Packages/fedora-release-notes-8.0.0-3.noarch.rpm
then ran.
yum clean all
rpm -Uvh fedora-release-8-3.noarch.rpm fedora-release-notes-8.0.0-3.noarch.rpm
yum -y update

And now I'm just waiting for it to finish updating all the packages..

I did this from a clean install of FC7 since all my prior attempts to burn a FC8 dvd has failed.. (My burner apparently is worthless, cd's work fine but dvds.. naah)..

Do you use kde or gnome?

I had about 10 packages removed. Generally kernels, video drivers and the like.

I am VERY disappointed that Fedora 8 did not include gnucash in the DVD. I don't have a high speed internet connection and had to take several hours to download gnucash when I upgraded to FC7. I don't want to repeat that. Can I get the DVD and upgrade my FC7 or FC6 and keep an older version of gnucash? If I wanted to download gnucash again, I would switch to Ubuntu which is totally free, including postage for the CD.

No idea what comes in the dvd I just upgraded using the internet. I'm lucky that I have a good net connection.

You can request free-media from fedora as well just search for it on fedoraproject.org

and now i think theres a problem on the mirrors because i cant open anything related to yum

strikeforce

You need to manually change your sound in the configuration to use pulse-audio.

lexuss
2007-11-10, 06:26 PM CST
how do i do this?

strikeforce
2007-11-10, 06:36 PM CST
System -> Preferences -> Hardware -> Sound

Then when you are in there.

Devies should all be pulse-audio except for the default mixing tracks.

Under the sounds tab

esd should be ticked.

If you still don't get audio run system-config-sound

Do the rpms (the fedora-release and livna ones) backup the existing repo files and replace them with ones that point to FC8 data? I ask because it will be imperative that I do the upgrade process via local mirrors.

strikeforce

Yep I believe so check though.

Well I am a teth of the way through a yum upgrade by changing my fedora.repo, fedora-updates.repo and livna.repo mirror from 7 to 8. Dependencies checked out ok except for an initial loop with beryl-settings, kdenetwork, NetworkManager and heliodor. But then I just removed those via yum and continued. Hopefully this premption won't before it all finishes will not prove to be a jinx.

Yeah I had to do the same thing Jongi. NetworkManager wasn't an issue for me however, something will pull it in though.

So a little disappointed. Had hoped the upgrade would fail and I would install x86_64 instead. Guess that will have to be for a separate partition.

First boot went well. Watch out for me in General Support with a lot of *****ing. Hopefully not.
