View Full Version : DVD +Rs not working

indietrash
2007-11-01, 02:19 PM CDT
when I try to read a DVD +R I get a popup saying this:

Error - Konqueror

Could not start process Unable to create io-slave:

klauncher siad: Unknown protocol ".

.

I have two different brands of discs, both of which worked fine on FC6 (now I'm on F7). CD burning works fine (it pops up that I've put in a blank disc, and asks me if I wanna e.g. burn a disc with KIIIB), any idea what may be causing this?

OK, try mounting the cdrom and see what happens.

$ mount /dev/cdrom <any mount point>

and see what happens and send the results of dmesg (just the tail this time!!!)

Do these DVDs work on other PCs?

kadambi
2007-11-04, 09:03 AM CST
just to be clear: to mount cdrom, do this

$ mount /dev/sr0 <mount point>.

It seems you have one HDD (SATA) HDD on the system and the DVD RW. Right?

I had seen the problem sometime ago (can't remember how I fixed it). On the DVD writer, is the Blue side of the data cable connected to the motherboard port and the black side to the DVD drive, right?

indietrash
2007-11-04, 10:06 AM CST
I just get 'mount: you must specify the filesystem type' when I try to mount (I'm a complete newbie at this sort'a stuff, so I have no idea how to proceed).

I have a SATA disc and a DVD RW and a DVD ROM.
the DVD RW (and the ROM) is IDE.

oh, and what do you mean by posting only the tail of dmesg? (just for future reference)

kadambi
2007-11-04, 10:38 AM CST
OK!

Lets see the contents in /etc/fstab.

$ cat /etc/fstab

and contents of /proc/scsi/scsi

Try mounting the device now:

$ mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 <mount point>

Do you get the same error for both CD drives?

Tail means just the last few line of output of a command. For instance if I want to see tail of dmesg command, I'd type:

$ dmesg | tail

indietrash

kadambi

From the dmesg I do see the devices being detected!!

I checked my F7 system! Its not using "sr" devices. Its using "scd".

Try:

$ mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd[0-1] <mount point>

and let me know what happens.

And if that doesn't work, can you check the data cable connections to make sure the blue side is connected to the motherboard?

---------------------------

indietrash
2007-11-04, 02:34 PM CST
I get:
mount: block device /dev/scd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/scd0,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

when I use scd1 I get "no medium" of course, 'cos there is none.

and this problem is exclusively a DVD +R problem. I can play "real" CDs/DVDs. I should probably've mentioned that at first. sorry for being stupid, once again :p
thank you ever so much for trying to help.

kadambi
2007-11-04, 03:07 PM CST
Did you burn these DVD+R's yourself?

This might be a long shot, but are they formatted as UDF. In that case, try

$ mount -t udf /dev/scd0 <mount point>

and let me know

indietrash
2007-11-04, 04:27 PM CST
oh, no. they are blank.

kadambi
2007-11-04, 04:31 PM CST
That might explain why they won't mount.

indietrash
2007-11-05, 08:16 AM CST
yeah I should probably've explained my problem a bit more in-depth. sorry.
any ideas on what's wrong, whatsoever?

kadambi
2007-11-05, 08:23 AM CST
You mean they are just blank media?

Obviously, you can't mount it, because there is no physical file system to mount.

indietrash
2007-11-05, 10:39 AM CST
but err... they are DVD +Rs... I wanna burn stuff on them...

kadambi
2007-11-05, 10:59 AM CST
Thats fine. Just use k3b (or any other CD/DVD burning SW) to burn data into it. It'll make the filesystem then.

kadambi
2007-11-05, 11:03 AM CST
Just to confirm.

I just popped in a DVD+R and got this message.

"cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!"

Expected, because it doesn't have any tracks. Its blank media.

I can burn data into it using k3b now.

indietrash
2007-11-05, 11:18 AM CST
when I popped in DVD +Rs on FC6 I distinctly remembering the system recognizing a blank DVD and asking me if I wanted to make something with KIIIB.
and besides, KIIIB just tells me that there's no medium in the drive.

edit: I just tried again for the hell of it, and I actually got the option to create a DVD data disc with KIIIB. but KIIIB still shows me that there's no medium in the drive when I press burn.

kadambi
2007-11-05, 11:20 AM CST
Sure if k3b is looking at the right drive? (since you have two DVD drives)?

indietrash
2007-11-05, 11:21 AM CST
I only have one writer. and I have burned CD-Rs successfully.

kadambi
2007-11-05, 11:27 AM CST
Can you tell me which drive k3b is looking at? and if it is indeed the writer

indietrash
2007-11-05, 11:32 AM CST
KIIIB finds two

CD/DVD Drives.

Readonly Drives
ATAPI DVD-ROM 16X

Writer Drives
SONY DVD RW DW-Q30A

as mentioned, I have burnt CD-Rs.

kadambi
2007-11-05, 12:05 PM CST
Can you test if you can burn a CD-R with K3b? That might help us narrow it down a bit further.

indietrash
2007-11-05, 01:25 PM CST
like mentioned a couple of times, yes I can. I did it yesterday as well. that was after the DVD was rejected.

kadambi
2007-11-05, 03:28 PM CST
OK. I am stumped!!

I can think of couple of things.

1. Do you have DVD+RW tools installed?
2. What brand of media is the DVD? Sometimes, certain brands might cause few issues.

indietrash
2007-11-06, 05:37 AM CST
uh... DVD+RW tools? no idea. I have installed basically the same programs and codecs and whatever that I had on FC6 (where DVD burning worked).

I have multiple brands. all of which worked on FC6. can't remember any save for Verbatim off the top of my had right now, but I can check when I get home, I guess.

indietrash
2007-11-06, 10:05 AM CST
most of my CDs are Maxell, but hey guess what - I just noticed: in the upper left hand corner where the devices are, it says that there's an empty DVD-R in the writer, but when I press burn to get up the burn dialog I get the no medium present thing.

kadambi
2007-11-06, 10:32 AM CST
dvd+rw rools is the set of tools for mastering dvds. Its usually installed when k3b is installed. Lets double check that anyway.

On the command line, do this

$ yum search dvd+rw-tools

You should probably get an output like this

dvd+rw-tools.i386 installed

OK, the tools are installed. Good!

Interestingly, I saw the "no medium present" on my FreeBSD system. Apparently, I didn't have write permissions.

Do you have "sudo" enabled on your system? If not its easy to do so.

Open "/etc/sudoers" and add your name.

add this line to the file:

<username> ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL

Then start k3b from the commandline:

$ sudo k3b

It should probably see the medium then. If this works, we might just have to change permissions on the device.

Let me know how this works. Good luck.

indietrash
2007-11-06, 02:19 PM CST
SUCCESS!

it told me:
Unable to find growisofs executable
K3b uses growisofs to actually write dvds. Without growisofs you will not be able to write dvds. Make sure to install at least version 5.10.
Solution: Install the dvd+rw-tools package.

so I uninstalled the dvd+rw-tools package and re-installed it, and I'm living happily ever after.
thanks HEAPS for the help man :D

p.s.
how safe is it using sudo like this?

kadambi
2007-11-06, 02:26 PM CST
Awesome!

sudo is pretty safe for an operation like this. If you want to be extra safe, you can remove "NOPASSWD". Then you'll have to enter your passwd (not the root passwd!!) everytime you invoke k3b.

Then the line would be:

<username> ALL=(ALL) ALL

indietrash
