I want tp install Fedora 7 with minimum packages to run iptable.
I tried text mode and unselected all packaes and still it is about 1GB big but in Fedora documentation said that minimum installation need less than 400MB how can i make it about 400mb.

Wow that's very interesting, I've never tried that.

When you installed did you hunt through each of the package groups and un-chech the group, or did you just de-select the 'server, development, ...' major headings ?

I just installed f7 under a qemu virtualization. I used the gui installer and de-selected every package group except I left dhcp-client under base packages/base. Also the vim editor.

The installed size of the root fs is still 639MB (using 'df --si'). That's still a fair but bigger than 400MB.

Removing selinux-policy & selinux-policy-targeted got it down to 534MB ! That's a lot better.

Well I'm pretty shocked at what got included . /usr is 486MB. The /usr is 486MB, and /usr/share is 286MB.

/usr/share/icons is 66MB on this non-graphical install !

The dependencies loops are just amazing (and a litle dumb I think). grub requires redhat-artwork which forces inclusion of gtk2 and half a dozen X11 libraries !!!

33MB in /usr/share/doc and 20MB in /usr/share/man could be safely deleted on a standalone system (but I think just a few packages used to use their /usr/share/doc files for functionality ??)

Very very weird - obviously fedora isn't ideal when size matters.

yes i did install fedora with even 1 packege (optenal packages)
I was looking at packages it intalling so many packages which look like they are useless for networking and iptable but about 300 i guess i need SeLinux for security reason. This interesting that I couldnt find any premade vm.
do you know how can i get information about packeges and dependencies cause i thing i have to uninstall all use less packages manually by rpm command?

you may want to reconsider your choice of os here for your needs why not use dsl or lfs. is their a particular reason you need fedora?
