of hijacking and side tracking threads with personal hellos and how's it goings between members and community managers.
'Cool' as you may think it is, it only causes problems: 1st it upsets people trying to get help and 2nd it makes it harder for others to give help when there are post after post crap about how's someone's day has been going or whether someone had a beer in a pub or bottle of it at home.
It's as bad for these forums as was (thankfully quickly stopped) fab of moderators posting to closed threads.

A few months ago there was a lot of interactive vitality in this forum. Since the recent changes it has become somewhat dull, boring, and lifeless. Lots of folks are trying to deal with that in some new way that keeps it from being utterly dull, boring, and lifeless.
Apparently your preference is that it become utterly dull, etc., etc.,.
Noted. :D

I think the decrease in vitality might also be due to the increase in newbies that I've noticed recently. I spend most of my time now scouring the forum for cross-posts and duplicate threads and trying to get the newbies to use suitable titles for their threads instead of things like "Noob needs help bad" :)

I think the decrease in vitality....
Well it has been disappointing. I was making good money with my "how-long's-this-thread-gonna-last" PM pool. The side bets ("will he get banned?") were especially lucrative.
Times are tough. Guess it's back to purse snatching for me.

That's why there's Wibble forum.

If 'utterly dull' means that these forums remain actually useful for people who are looking for help, then answer is 'yes'.

Without the odd flame or heated argument this forum would be as boring as the debian forum :( ( watching paint dry is more exciting :) ) and I would get bored and come here less .

Morning Pete.
You have a valid point and a reasonable suggestion.
However, let me give you a bit more insight as to why it happens, and what you can expect.
It's an informal means of warning, arbitration and de-escalation. I try to use it with as much courtesy and as I can as this is a community, and I believe interactions should be based in a sense of fellowship and humor, or if nothing else, acknowledgment and courtesy -- not arbitrary authority. Although that is required sometimes too.
I, and perhaps other CMs, will continue to use the tactic from time to time, to disarm a potential problem, and/or let the OP or guy that asked the last question or made the last remark know that quiz/tolerance/spoonfeed time is over, and do-the-homework/put-a-sock-in-it/get-on-with-it time has begun.
Yesterday was a busy day for your volunteer CMs and Admins. Rude and frustrated seemed to rule the whole bloody day. And I believe I know the thread which triggered this suggestion, and sadly it could not be salvaged. Although several members gave it one h*ll of a shot!
I will also, however, readily admit that sometimes it develops a life of its own. Trust we are working on it.
Does this help, Pete?

I've noticed that and that's why I disagree with pete_1967 on this one, I think it's a good tactic in those cases.

My computer has a special feature that allows me to bypass this "chatter". It's called a scroll wheel.

As was mentioned, when the thread is productive then it is down to business. When the answer was given four or five times then it's miller (or lipton) time.
edit: Oh, hey Pete, howya doin?

I say we ban him for his insolence. That will teach him.
I know I'm a new man because of the two days of vacation alloted to me by the moderators to seriously consider my actions. During that time, I realized that I am a man prone to fits of manic and undirected actions that only serve to get me in trouble and that I am man enough to control this. I can do it.
I also learned that Gallcomp is a is a pee-pee head, but the the stuff above was intended to be the lesson here.
thanks,
