Brother network printer problem

I scored a Brother MFC-5460CN printer today, we have a mixed bag of 'doz versions and Fedora on our home network. one of the reasons I grabbed this printer is because it is ethernet capable, so I figured that would solve the samba etc problem, I tried everything they said at the support.brother.com site, but nothing gets out to the printer when I try to print a test page. I can ping it fine (DHCP, printer at 192.168.001.101) but no mater what setup I use it just won't print in Linux. ('doz picked it up no problem so I know the network function works)

tried that, the driver shows up, I enter the IP address as shown on the printer display, but still no go.

and further, tried it with a USB connection too, found by HAL, but still no printing. but the printer does work well with 'doz

I am befuddled.
