I am thinking about purchasing a digitizer, mostly for use in Inkscape. The models available in the local stores are either from Genius (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883101103) , or Pentagram (http://pentagram.eu/pentagram/en/products/graphic_tablets).

None of the official sites mentions Linux support, and the support folk said that the device does not work in this OS. Perhaps they were not aware of the fact that it might work with a generic driver?

Can anyone tell whether either of these digitizers works under Linux (specifically, Fedora 7)?

I am aware of the fact that Wacom digitizers are supported in Linux (http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net/), but I need a cheaper device.

I've obtained a Genius tablet, and there is no out of the box support for it. The mouse works, but the pen does not. Have tried Inkscape, and GIMP, none of them can see the tablet.

Are there any troubleshooting steps someone can recommend?

Having reviewed these pages, I managed to compile and install the driver for the tablet:
http://eva.fit.vutbr.cz/~xhorak28/index.php?page=WizardPen_Driver
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TabletSetupWizardpen

However, the setup is not yet complete. I can see that the system reacts to events coming from the digitizer if I launch xev, but GIMP and Inkscape tell me that there are no extended input devices connected to the system. Can someone suggest what is to be done next?
