ATL1 and Fedora 8

Hi,
I've got an Asus P5L VM1394 with an ATL1 gigabit ethernet integrated network card. I have installed Fedora 7. But the network card doesn't work.

I don't know if Fedora 7 is supporting this atl1 but I've seen something like in Fedora 8, bugs will be corrected for atl1.

So I have 2 questions :

- Is it easy to fix the problem with Fedora 7 and what I have to do ?

- When Fedora 8 will be delivered (in November I guess) and will Fedora 8 support this motherboard ?

The L1 chip is supported with kernels >= 2.6.21. F7 uses a 2.6.22 kernel, which contains L1 support. F8 development currently uses a 2.6.23-rc kernel, which also contains L1 support.

So what I have to check to make it work. I've got a network with DHCP working well and when I use gnome network configuration application. I've got this message :

atl1 device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.

What can I do ? :confused:

Are you running a Xen kernel? (You didn't provide `uname -r`.)

Is your F7 installation a guest OS virtual machine?

My F7 is installed on hard drive.

I used the DVD installation which was complicated because the installation worked only when the HD was on the first position on the PATA cable and DVD drive on the last position, curious thing.

I don't know what is Xen kernel.

So it is a xen kernel I guess and 2.6.20 is below 2.6.21 !

I guess I have to reinstall Fedora.
How can I choose the kernel during installation ?

You have installed a Xen kernel. Judging from your comments, you don't need it. Replace it with a non-Xen kernel. Get these rpm packages if you're running an i686 (32-bit) kernel and copy them to your home directory.

If you're running x86_64, replace these with similarly named files in the x86_64 directory on the fedora web site.

After you get the files copied to your home directory, execute these commands. (Enter the root password when prompted.)
$ su -c 'rpm -ivh kernel*2.6.22*rpm'
$ su -c 'reboot'
You should be able to configure your network interface after that.

Now, it works fine.

But I had to use -Uvh instead of -ivh, not to have file conflicts for upgrade.

And I had to update also nash and mkinitrd packages before the kernel and at the same time because they are self dependent. (why making 2 different packages if we have to install them within the same operation :confused: ).

Anyway thanks J :) now the computer is loading all package updates.
