New Notebook Problems

Hi,

I have a new Acer 7520 which has a AMD X2 TK-53 CPU and Nvidia 7000m graphics system.

I have tried booting from the Fedora 7 Live CD. Unfortunately the boot process hangs shortly after uncompressing kernel is shown on screen :(

Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone managed to get the Nvidia 7000m working well with Fedora or Nvidia driver?

I have similar problem but only with FC7 64bit -> now i use FC7 32bit and it working. So maybe try version for 32bit.

Unfortunately I am using the 32 bit version of the Live CD.

Do you have the Nvidia 7000m graphics?

No my is Intel 950.
But just like I said I have this some problem but only with FC 64..also I have different CPU (Intel C2D T5600).
So I see that I can't help you. :/

Try another live distro like Knoppix. Post the result of "lspci" when you get a successful boot.

I have managed to install Ubuntu 7.04 x86 with the VESA video driver. The Ethernet is working and so I am able to post this :) However, I do want to use Fedora and hope I can find a work around or v8 works...

Being this the live distro I wouldn't know, but you may try with the regular DVD (if you can get your hands on it) and from the GRUB prompt first hit ESC (optionally F1 for the "traditional screen") and then simply type linux acpi=off, seems Acer laptops need that in order to boot.

Unfortunately I don't have the full distro so will probably wait for 8 before trying that.

So far I have managed to boot the Live CD using acpi=off and noapic set. But during boot there is a processor error about supporting dual core processors. If I continue the I get to the desktop but if I install the distro and reboot the kernel panics with the same error.

Once installed, you will have to pass GRUB the same arguments you used for booting the LiveCD i.e, press any key, then press e selecting the Fedora entry, then e again at the long kernel arguments line, and then at the very end use acpi=off and noapic, enter and then 'b' to boot. Once you have the distro up and running, you better edit /etc/grub.conf as root and add those missing arguments so you don't have to manually enter them with each boot.

No need to modify after install as acpi=off and noapic are already in the boot config. They can be added during the install wizard.

I have now also tried the x64 Live CD and been able to boot with out any kernel arguments but after installing the same error is seen :(

After doing further tests and banging my head against a wall :p I have found the following:

x86 Live CD: I need to set acpi=off and noapic to boot.

x86_64 Live CD: Boots with out additional kernel settings.

Unfortunately I have been a little confused with the ACPI / HDD error message so was not sure what was going on - sorry.

In both cases there is an intermittent error message (more frequent in x86) that forces me to have to shutdown the notebook. The error occurs during initial boot sequence as follows:

Red Hat nash version 6.0.9 starting
Unable to access resume drive (Label=swap-sd3)
Mount: Could not find filesystem '/dev/root'
Setuproot: Moving /dev/failed: No such file or directory
Setuproot: Error mounting proc: No such file or directory
Setuproot: Error mounting sys: No such file or directory
Switchroot: Mount failed: No such file or directory
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Any help appreciated.

I have filed the above as a bug on bugzilla since I have not been able to find a workaround that works.

probably an obvious question, but, have you tried installing the fedora drivers from livna? they work great with my geforce go 7600

Yeah the drivers work great but only when I can boot in to the computer. Since the message:

means I can't even get in to my system and have to force a shutdown.
