i opened audacity and it can't playback anything. I get the error: error while opening sound device. Please check the output device cettings and the project sample rate.
checking the preferences, the recording device is oss:/dev/dsp but the playback device is null, stating that it is using port audio v19.
I'm using alsa drivers patched according to this post: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=159516

If you are using Fedora 7 and have the system sounds activated, try turning off the Enable software sound mixing (ESD) checkbox in the Sound Preferences under System>Preferences> Hardware> Sound> Sounds tab. Then relaunch Audacity and it should work normally.
You can turn the system sounds back on after done editing. ESD seems to prevent Audacity from actually playing the sounds.

What if I don't have the menu choice: "System>Preferences>"?
In KDE I went to my Soundcard Detection and tried disabling the ALSA plugins but that didn't work; I get the same problem on two seperate machines; Fedora 7 & MythDora. Audacity will not record no matter which menu choice I try!!!! What a waste of time. Linux used to be media friendly and now I don't think so. I hope the community can pull a solution together soon or we'll all be slaves to vista drm bs...

I just want control of my "multi-media". Everything from my 8 track tapes to my arp/3gp cell videos, my cable tv to my mpeg1-4 and then 5,6 & 7 as it changes.
I want to capture, record, edit in fast forward, reverse and backwards. I want to import, export and save as any and all available formats out there. So please fix Fedora's compatibility issues...

Who are you asking to fix your problems? This is a user based support community. If you want fixes then ask the developers, they do not check these forums. If you're using KDE you won't have "System>Preferences>" That's only in Gnome.

Are the developers not also users? I'm sure they are here too.
Why did Fedora 7 change its default GUI to KDE anyway? Yes I figured this was the confusion in our common "audicity" problem. It only hurts the "Linux" movement to have this sort of distracting "bug". I find this a lot with linux is that when I go to fix one problem it opens up a can of worms. Then half the time I end up re formating and trying again; installing everything I like from the repositories; which is when my systems start acting funny.
My Fedora is more of a hobby than an operating system because it eats a lot of time setting up.
Cheers,
PS one more annoyance is the re-appearance of the "number lock" bug in F7.

Nope, Fedora installs Gnome by default unless you check KDE and uncheck Gnome during package selection. Again, if you've found a bug report it to the proper place, the developers do not monitor these forums. My system, including multimedia, works perfectly, so the problem must lie elsewhere.
Edit: If you installed from a LiveCD, there's a choice of a Gnome based or a KDE based CD. If you installed from DVD, Gnome is default.

So you can play and hear your cell phone vids and record sound from your mic jack? These are two things which are not happening on my system. What's strange is that just two days ago I had audicity recording audio from my AV amp and then when I stopped and started it; it stopped working for no reason and I have not been able to get it back since. So I am hoping to get help with that issue from anyone, anywhere...

I have played my cellphone videos but I threw my cellphone away several months ago and I'm now enjoying the peace and quiet of no buzzing and beeping when I'm having a cold brew :) Maybe your cellphone uses a codec that is unsupported in Linux.
One thing to be careful about is mixing repos, it's really best to use one and stick to it unless you really need an RPM from another. There's usually a fix for things. I was having a problem with sound in RealPlayer (I don't use it often) but it was easily fixed. (There's a thread still going on that)

I've noticed that one application would play the sound and video and another would only play the video and others would play nothing.
I think the problem is that the client software is not intelligent enough to seek out the codecs like in windows.
And I though the repository problem was fixed with Fedora7 because they "agreed" on a standard; so I've left my repo list to default.

I have the 'extra' codecs in 3 places:
/usr/local/lib/codecs/
/usr/lib/win32
/usr/lib/codecs/

I did try that forum with no luck. I still have no sound recording capability on my Fedora 7; not with audicity, not with Krecord either.

I think the reason I can get it working is because I'm disabling ESD before use. ESD seems to lock the sound system somehow so that Audacity can't access devices.
Try killing the esd process and launch Audacity and see if you can record and play. It's worth a shot.

How do I do that? In a console I tried ps but it only lists two processes and neither are ESD...

I don't know what sound daemon is the equivalent in KDE. I'm not really too familiar with KDE.
ESD if the sound daemon that Gnome uses for system sounds.
