I have a Gateway x866 Professional Desktop from 2000 that I would love to run Fedora on. My only problem is that Fedora (and also Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Freespire) refuses to even start up. Puppylinux and DSL will run in live-cd mode, but neither are aesthetically pleasing to the eye like Fedora. I'm trying to install GNOME based Fedora 7 using a CD-RW. I select the run from image option and it starts to boot up, but then I get this message:

ata2.00 exception Emask 0x0 Sact 0x0 Serr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
ata2.00 cmd a0/01:00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 tag 0 cdb 0x28 data 512 in

etc...

What the bloody hell did I do wrong? lol I've used this cd on my lap-top and it worked like a dream. Can it not find my hard drive?

When you installed Fedora , did you install virtualization package also ? Qemu kernel ?

It won't let me install Fedora. This is me trying to just boot into the live-cd. I honestly think it has something to do with my ATA hard drive. I've tried doing a network install on that desktop and it hangs when it tries to load the ata_pciix driver. Frankly I'm just at a loss as to what to do with it. I've removed the video card thinking it was that, and I've changed the jumper on the hard drive to make it master instead of cable select. If I knew what the ata_pciix driver was I might know what's going on.

I'm trying openSUSE now. It's gotten so far as to download and install packages, so I'm hoping it'll be an alternative until Fedora works with my desktop. Instead of loading an ata_pciix driver, it loaded a pciix driver and that worked. If there's a workaround for Fedora for the network install already out I would appreciate a reseponse, however it isn't necessary.

openSUSE didn't work. but i have a workaround for the fedora network install. when it hangs on the ata_pciix driver, I just removed the cd and it went on with the install. It's installing now and I hope to be using Fedora before the nights out. :)

Have you tried downloading the dvd iso from here
http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/torrents//Fedora-7-i386.torrent
then burn the iso image

no dvd burner. what I'm going to try to do next is to put the dvd iso onto my iPod and then run a network install and use the .iso file off the ipod for my installation. If that dosen't work I'll say screw it and ask for this thread to be closed.

I went one step further than screw it and ran knoppix and downloaded the .iso file to a seperate partition on the hard drive. I'm at work right now and I'm wondering if it actually went on with installation. Last I checked it was still resolving dependencies. Well, if it works I will be thrilled, however I'm getting tired of talking to myself so I would request that this thread be closed as I feel I haven't really helped anyone with my ordeal.

If 7.90 dosen't work, do you think I should try Fedora Core 6 on the desktop? I've been hearing on the forums that it works better with older hardware.
