Hello,
I have been using linux for 8 years, and have installed many times.
However, I am perplexed as to how to burn a bootable DVD for the Fedora 7.
I have downloaded the fedora 7 iso image, I believe about 2.8 gigs.
I burned it with K3B, but when I try to boot, the CMOS says 'booting from cd' like it normally does, but fails to boot from the DVD, and goes to boot from hard drive.
I have googled and googled, thinking this would be a simple thing, maybe some command lines.
Fedora is no help, because they suggest using windows based burning tools like Nero.
I DON"T HAVE WINDOWS!
I know this is a simple thing, maybe even command line using cdrecord or dvdgrow or something of that nature.
Please someone tell me how to burn the fedora 7 iso onto a DVD so that it is bootable

Try downloading via bit torrent. Every Fedora DVD iso i have downloaded via ftp or http has been corrupted

thank you, the checksum worked out, the problem i have is how to create a BOOTABLE dvd--I used K3B and chose 'burn data' DVD and that was effective, but it did not boot.

It should boot then as long as your optical drive is higher on the boot priority list in your BIOS.
It seems thats the case since that what the bios tells you on boot... =\
When you bring up your current OS, can you mount the DVD and see the files?

yes I can. I thought there was some command to make the dvd a bootable image, rather than just putting the image on the DVD as a file

I don't use K3B, but what I just quoted you as saying sounds like the problem. You are not supposed to burn the ISO file as data. You are supposed to transfer the image in the ISO file. Examine the DVD you burned with a file manager. If you see folders and files, I apologize and leave. If you see only the ISO file that you downloaded, you are not using K3B properly. If that is so, consult K3B help or look through its menus for something to the effect of "Burn project as a disk image". That's what Nero offers. Selecting "Create a data disk" in Nero, for example, would just burn the ISO file to the disk. It's an incredibly common error.

stoat, i believe you are right. I think I just burned the iso file onto the disk.
So what you are saying is that I should see multiple files and folders on the DVD, instead of just one file.

yes, this is right, and not by unpacking the files to a folder and burning them to a "data dvd" because this way the "booting information" will get lost. In k3b you should use at the welcome screen: "further actions...-> burn dvd iso image"

Okay I feel a bit stupid--this was too easy--simply needed to choose the right selection in k3b. works fine. Thanks for the help.

Ah. Didn't think that you might have just been burning the iso onto the DVD, and not unpacking it.
:D
Glad you have it working. :)
