My Dell XPS M1710 finally has Fedora 7 on it. My fans are not turning on when they were supposed to. It got really hot for no reason. Is there a way I can get the fans to turn on so I don't destroy the laptop?? I appreciate any help I can get.

Sometimes it's possible to manually adjust the fan speed and some temperatures. Be carefull though... . You can control powermanagement (as far as the computer allows) through the kernel interface proc . Become su and then.. :
su -
cd /proc/ACPI/
In ACPI you will see all the ACPI controls. If your fan is supported, then it should be listed there as:
/proc/ACPI/fan/<nameofvan(e.g. FAN0)>
There you can echo to it to manually turn it on or off.

Google for it. I tried it on my laptop without any luck :(

On my Dell laptops with Fedora 7, I use Gkrellm program with I8kutils to control the laptop fans.
It works very well on all of them.
Try yum install gkrellm i8kutils and after running the Gkrellm, in it's configuration options, enable the Dell I8K and configure it's temperature settings.
You may need a reboot or with Services program to start the I8k service manually.
