Where does system->admin...->Sound detection get you ?

I have a 945 (Toshiba) based laptop with
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

The modprobe lines
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

solved my problem (after reboot of course).

The soundcard config is set to ...
default pcm device: ALC861V Analog, your you'll have a diffreent analog no doubt.

DUMP the OSS stuff - you probably don't need or want it.
