Hi All,
I have been given a PC with this spec
AMD K6-2 450 @ 500mhz
512mb ram
10gb harddrive
rage 128 graphics
I have tried debian ( to heavy ), puppy ( didn't run properly ) & dsl ( wouldn't install ) , Can anyone recommend another lightweight linux O/S.

I had Xandros 2.0/KDE running pretty good on a Micron AMD-K6 350 MGHZ...128 ram...not sure what video card it had...I got rid of the box a few months ago.

The new Zenwalk might work well.

SAM Linux. I installed it on a machine with much less than that and it's running beautifully.

Any version of slackware should run fine on that computer.
Or you could use something custom like slax.
I'd try the latest slackware first, and use fluxbox or xfce for the window manager, unless you intend to run it from console in which case dont bother with the bloat.
I have Fedora 6 on an old laptop, and as long as you adhere to using the least bloated (well programmed) applications, ie XFE, gqview, abiword, gnumeric, xarchiver, xterm, dillo, etc, and dont install gnome or kde, then it should be fine.

With the possible exception of the limited HD space, it looks like F7 would run adequately on that box. My father just installed F7 on an old ~300 MHz box with 256 MB RAM and a 20 GB HD as a backup machine. It's somewhat sluggish but usable. It's possible that with XFCE instead of the default GNOME it would feel much faster.

I'd second that Bob, on your recommendation in another thread I DL'd SAM. Haven't installed it yet, but it runs from the CD about as fast as FC6 did from the HD, and has kernel support for my wifi card. I'd also been playing with Mandriva 2007.0, that will install on 192MB despite the posted minimum being 256MB, while no speed-burner it would be OK for the browsing/e-mail/word-processing user, and that's on a 300Mhz P2, I suspect that if I could have persuaded F7 to install it would probably run reasonably well too. Makes Vist look a brick, doesn't it!

Hi All,
Thank you all for the suggestions , I think I will have a look a SAM .
I have also been looking through my old distro archive to see what might be suitable and found
Redhat 9 and thought I might give it a shot as well ( The first time I used it I was very new to linux and didn't get on with it )

My niece brought me an old 533 mHz P3 with 256 Meg of Ram she picked up at a yard sale.
I clipped in a HD with FC6 on it, and it fired up and ran very nicely. I intend to install F7 on it and give it back. I see no need to downgrade the OS.
