View Full Version : FC2T3 - test results

I took "weird hardware" and installed FC2T3. here's the result...
System:
P II 400 Mhz - 256 MB Ram
MSI 6151 mainboard - ES1371 Sound onboard
ATI Radeon 9200SE AGP @ Medion 1998
Adaptec 2940 SCSI Controller
SCSI Zip 100
SCSI HP Scanjet 4C
Prim. IDE Master: IBM DTTA 35110 harddisk
Prim. IDE Slave: LTN382 40xCD-Rom
Sec. IDE Master: Maxtor 84320D4 harddisk
Sec. IDE Slave: HL-DT-ST DVD GSA 4081B DVD burner
Internet: xDSL via Modem and ethernet card
Installation:
Type:Clean install - user defined - german language
With first boot, systems wants to configure GFX-Card and monitor. The used font to display the messages are too small. It's very hard to read. Maybe it's "ATI related"... After confirmation, System continue with readable fonts.
Test results - hardware:
complete hardware is running fine - except SCSI zip drive : "sda4 is not a valid block device."
Test results - software:
KDE freezes if an audio CD is inserted during startup. Curious, but it happen. Without audio CD in drive during startup KDE works.
up2date: version 4.3.16-1 (from iso) and 4.3.17-1 (from server) show package sizes with 0KB
XMMS has - we know it - no MP3 support. Installing "xmms-mp3-1.2.8-3.p.i386.rpm" will enable MP3 support.
Sound problems with Ensoniq ES1371:
start Tux-Racer -> sound is avail (effects - getting a fish - are too late)
leave Tux-Racer
start chromium -> NO SOUND
leave chromium
open terminal and run system-config-soundcard as su
press "play testsound" button
-> if you hear the sound, fine - press ok
-> maybe the app freezes (and after a while it starts playing the sound, so be patient)
start chromium again -> sound is avail
FC2T3 is - from my point of view - a great result and a big step forward into the correct direction. Keep up the good work.

Installing on one of my test machines now.
I usually run the test rigs with Overclockix (a remaster of Knoppix) so I know that all is functional and works in linux.
FC1 had no problems, the previous FC2 tests had varying issues.
I have high hopes for Test 3. :)
More soon, including system specs.

Hmmmm.
Installed on a system with a Biostar M7VIZ mATX motherboard:
Install went fine, boot starts and then shuts down machine.
I tried a GF2 video card to see if that was the issue: nope.
Trying an install on a P3 Dual 1Ghz now- install almost done.

Finished my install yesterday. No problems, all hardware has been detected properly:
Gigabyte 7N400L
AXP 2400+ @ 11x190
512 DDR
Radeon 9000 PRO (DRI works fine! Finally!)
SB Audigy 2
MS IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 USB
HP 940c
HP 4470c scanner (no support for this crap)
I don't know if it's a bug or I do sth wrong (i'm kind of a Linux noob). Almost every time I restart or power on my machine, filesystem check and reboot is forced. I do a shutdown using 'poweroff'; restart using 'reboot' command. Also tried shutdown and restart buttons on the login screen - the same behavior. Before system restarts it says that filesystem was unmounted properly. Weird? In FC1 there was no such a problem... Just to let you know...
P.S. Going offilne for about a week

Yeah, I expect so, and I have no problem with that, especially since it IS a test release. :)
Non-functioning system is:
AMD Athlon XP 1700
Biostar M7VIZ mATX board with integrated video, nic and sound
256mb PC2100 DDR
old Maxtor 3gb HDD
cdrom
The good news is that it is running fine on my other test machine:
P3 1000 dual cpu
Acorp mobo
512mb pc133 ram
GF2 MX400 video
same 3 gb HDD
Asus 52x cdrom
realtek 8139 nic
Only issue I have so far is that the video will only go to 800x600.
NVidia 5336 drivers just installed fine, so now I will try and tweak things around just a bit. ;)

Done. :)
Hitting a new issue and looking for info now:
the GF2 MX 400 video card is just not working properly:
no resolution over 640x480 will work.
800x600 will show up but the resolution will not actually work...
Card and monitor both will do 1024x768 easily so that is not the issue.
NVidia's 5336 drivers seem to install but no splash screen and no change in viewable area.
At least THIS issue I can investigate before submitting a bug! ;)

I am having the same 640x480 issue here, even though this monitor and video card worked a 800x600 on core 2 test 2. 800x600 is listed as an option, but will not work. When in "Gnome" if I go to "Start Here" then to "Preferences", "Screen Resolution" my only option is 640x480. Yet from "System Settings" "Display" I have the 800x600 option. How can I add 800x600 to the "Gnome" "Screen Resolution"?

I installed Fedora Core 2 Test 1.92 from scratch after backing up main files. My system is:
Athlon XP2500+ Bartlon
Gigabyte GA-7VM400M-P
Nvidia Geforce4 MX 440
512 MB DDR-RAM PC3200
40GB Maxtor
Everythin is fine. The system runs at 1024x768 resolution. The only issue is the faulty Nvidia driver that crashes with the kernel. I use dual-boot with Windows XP Pro and haven't encountered issue. SElinux is enabled, it doesn't complain anymore. The sound works great with the integrated VIA soundchip.
Fedora Core 2 Test 3 appears to be ready for the release other than some minor bugs.

Same screen resolution problem here. Nvidia TNT2 m64. As others, worked fine with FC2 test 2
During last steps of installation, it asked me to select a resolution to use. I had settings from 640x480 up to 1152x864 to chose from. Selected 1024x768.
Then a bit later, (when gnome started I assume) it asked me again to select a resolution but I was only presented with 640x480 to select. And then, same behaviour mentioned in mars_hall's post.
Does this only happen with NVidia cards? Has anybody encountered this with ATI or other?
mars_hall, what vid card do you have in that system?
Now installing on other box with ATI card, will post results later.

I've tried a few things to resolve this issue, including mucking about with xorg.conf.
No luck: even when set to 800x600 I am stuck with 640x480 it seems.
Note on nvidia drivers: when I run the 5336 they SEEM to install ok but module is not running.
modprobe nvidia will get nvidia listed in lsmod but still does not work.
My wild guess at this point: xorg implementation issue.
Of course, as this is the first time I have messed with xorg, I may be wrong. ;)

Did you edit your XFree86config file? to use the nvidia driver instead of the nv one? Also current nvidia binary dirvers won't work with the default 2.6.x kernel builds due to some changes made by the team. Apparently these changes are going to be brought into the main kernel tree for 2.6.6 so I hope nvidia update their driver. I don't think I will jump of the test3 ship, but I will keep plodding away on my test2box until FC2 final is out then I may migrate a few of my machines.

Please take the time and join the fedora-test-list at
fedora-test-list (https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-test-list/), if you have not already done so.
The problem is a fedora bug through DDC and the quick fix is
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Basically xorg detected that right resolution but somewhere between gnome or kde configuration through DDC, HorizSync and VertRefresh is commented. So just uncomment thouse two lines

Same screen resolution problem here. During setup FC2-t3 recognized the video card and changed the resolution to 1024x768 but after rebooting it has been reset to 640x480. Changing the resolution with the Gnome display settings tool appeard to have no efect.

I hope this gets fixed before release.

Similar problem here on a PII 400 laptop with an ATI Mobiliy (M6) video card. During installation, options were from 640x480 to 1024x768. I've choosen 1024. After that, only 640x480 and 800x600 are available, but the system works at 1024x768. Weird! I didn't experience this problem with any previous test release, nor with FC1.

Ok, I broke down and joined the mailing list. ;)
Thanks for the tip on the fix: I can now get 800x600, although 1024x768 is not an option.
I logged out/in (modded innitab to allow console boot, as always;)) and restarted x to get 800x600.
Rebooting to see if 1024x768 shows up.........
Well- at least 800x600 is better....

I did as suggested above. I am enjoying Test 3 at 1280x1024. It's so nice to see a normal desktop again.
now it time to see if I have 3d support. I have a need to play Unreal Tournament 2004.
Any idea where to get 3d status in this core?

At a guess I would say type 'glxinfo' into the console. Also looking at your sig I see you have a 9700, so I guess try out the ATi drivers and see if they will install/work in this release

here is an interesting thing. I reboot linux. The desktop reverted back to 640x480. I had to do that cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf again to get a 1024x768 (I was mistaken on getting a 1280x1024 desktop). How would I make this a permanent fix?
Also, I have to go into the network properties at boot up to turn on the ethernet connection. Any thoughts?
Direct rendering is turned off when I ran the 'glxinfo'. How do I change that? Isn't that the thing that I need to run 3D applications?
Another observation: Sound seems to be working, but when I try to play audio CD's I get no sound. and trying to play back wav files crashes prog.

Network:
run "system-config-network" and check if hardware will be activated during startup.
If "eth0" fail during startup, check if you use DHCP instead if static ip's.
Same with your dial in connection...
Rendering:
If "glxinfo |grep rendering" results with "direct rendering:No", there's something wrong with your ATI config. Me is using a Radeon9200 which installed fine.
Sound:
Check the input device CD via "KMix". Mine has had - after install - VOLUME 0.

OK, after looking around and messing around for a bit, I'm now posting for some help. I have new Dell Inspiron 5150:
Specs:
3.2Ghz P4
1 gig ram
60 gig HD
Nvidia GeForce FX Go5200 rev 161
w/64 mb
Broadcom 4400 10/100 Ethernet
Pluses: No problem with network or sound right out of the box!
During original install the monitor type was not detected, so I set it to Generic LCD size 1600x1200. I then saw something similar to what had been reported before, i.e. when I rebooted after install I only got 640x480 as an option for the screen setup.
I saw the following error:
(II) LoadModule: "ddc"

I put in the following lines since DDC did not seem to work:
HorizSync 30.0 - 100.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 100.0
(I think I saw these on another site for the 5150)
Even though it said Panel was 1024x768, I was still stuck at 640x480, and looking at the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file I saw that most modes were being rejected because: width too large for Virtual Size. I then added the following to the Display SubSection.
Virtual 1600 1200
This seemed to give me the larger virtual screen, and the log showed that there were many modes not being rejected any longer. However, the xorg.conf file still only had 640x480 in the mode list. I added back in the following:
Modes "1600x1200" "1400x1050" "1280x960" "1024x768" "640x480"
Now I can get either 640x480 or 1024x768. The other modes seem to have been accepted, but when I toggle through them (Ctrl-Alt-+) I get either blank or blue screens for all other modes.
I've run out of ideas to try to get something closer to the native panel resolution.... I haven't yet tried the actual nvidia driver (instead of nv) but my impression is that would primarily help with hardware acceleration. I'll attach my xorg.conf and full log file for reference. [well I only figured out how to attach a single file..]
Any suggestions?

Well, my problem with the nvidia was not a Fedora problem, or an xorg problem -- rather an administrative problem with the buyer who ordered my laptop. It turns out what I received only has XGA (1024x768) resolution. See other post:

Network configuration:
During install, my networkcard - eth0 - has been installed with default DHCP. After reboot, i saw the message FAILED ( to init) during startup. Running system-config-network showed up an inactive eth0. It was impossible to activate it. So it was also impossible to get access to internet via pppOE...
I switched from DHCP to static IP in the following way - which work in my case:
1.) open terminal and "su"
2.) run system-config-network
-> you'll see eth0 and your dial in connection
3.) doubleclick "eth0" (or selcet configure)
4.) selcet activate on boot
5.) select "for all users"
6.) usage of STATIC IP's
6.1) Address: 127.0.0.1
6.2) Subnet: 255.255.255.0
-> Default gateway is left blank
7.) choose "OK"
configure the dial in connection:
1.) doubleclick on your dial in connection (or selcet configure)
2.) if you want to access internet while boot, select activate on boot
3.) select "for all users"
4.) choose "get automatic ip config with -> dial in"
5.) select "get DNS info from provider"
6.) choose "OK"
After this modifications, i was able to activate eth0 ;) AND access internet...
Please can any further problems be posted in new threads?
Otherwise I'm gonna start splitting this.
