View Full Version : Fedora 7 PPC: live CD or multiple CDs? (Alternative to DVDs)

So I'm kind of inexperienced with linux so forgive me. I had an opportunity to get a G3 for like $5 so I couldn't really pass that up. Unfortunately it is only a CD drive and not a DVD, and I'd rather not upgrade the drive if I didn't have to. I was wondering if there are plans to bring the PPC version on multiple CD's or (even better) a live CD version? The only thing available at the moment is a DVD image. If no plans are available, could someone point me in the direction where I could learn how to accomplish this?

Thanks for any help...

Try downloading http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/ppc/os/images/boot.iso and then telling it to take its files from HTTP, server download.fedora.redhat.com, and folder /pub/fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/ppc/os/. That's what I'm gonna try tonight (it didn't work with a rawhide one I tried, but maybe the final release will). I did get the i386 one to work in a virtual machine, so it might work.

EDIT: I am attempting this method right now with my G3 iMac. I will be posting the results in my iMac thread (also here in the PPC forum).

I have been looking high and low for an FC7 live cd or dvd that I can run on my eMac. Don't want to install just yet as this is my work computer and has a lot of important stuff on it that I don't want o risk losing.

While I'm here does anyone also know if the eMac will boot from USB drive into FC7?

I'm not aware of an official PPC live CD, but you might be able to make one with Revisor.

I hope they make one soon....in the meantime where can I find Revisor?

On another note, most Macs (pre Intel I believe) won't boot from USB...so live pendrive is out of the question.

The i386 version works well of liveusb though - now if only it was persistent!

yum install revisor

I'm not sure if you'd be able to do a PPC spin on an i386 machine, but it'd be worth a look. I'm planning on playing around with it to make an XFCE live CD :).

EDIT: And I forgot to mention, you might want to look into Debian. Fedora 7 ran incredibly slow on my iMac, and it wouldn't output to the internal screen once X started up, but Debian worked perfect from the beginning. I'm not sure of the differences between the iMac and eMac.
