I'm looking for a good First Person Shooter Game, that can easily be found in rpm format.
Any suggestions?
Also, is there a known WW2 FPS for Linux out there somewhere?

Check out nexuiz...it's a fun linux FPS (similar to quake) - http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz/

As far as a WW2 FPS...you may want to get Cedega

http://sauerbraten.org/ (just download, extract and open a terminal, cd to the 'sauerbraten' folder and "./sauerbraten-unix". It may be missing a couple of libs, but they're easily installed.)

Also Open Arena, a Quake III engine stand-alone.

Openarena: http://openarena.ws/?

World of Padman: http://padworld.myexp.de/

Enemy Territory: http://www.planetwolfenstein.com/files/files.shtml

Quake 4 also runs great but you need a store bought copy.

Go install Enemy Territory, only WW2 FPS I know that runs on Linux, and doesn't require a licensed copy of another game. Also MOHA runs, and you can get the installer and bianaries from icculus' site (www.icculus.org), you require the Windows game, though. Also Q3A, UT99, UT2K*, Unreal, Quake 1 & 2. You can find the binaries for Q3A in freshrpms.net for Fedora 5, 6 & 7 in convenient RPM format, also Nexuiz is available in Extras in FC <= 6. Another worth a look is Warsow (www.warsow.net). If you have Wine installed, you can get many more installed if you have the Windows versions (provided they're supported) from www.liflg.org

There are also modern-ish ports for Doom 1 and 2, my current favorite is Doomsday (also know as jDoom)... though you'd have to google to get an .rpm, homepage is at: www.doomsdayhq.com.... not to mention you still need the WAD files (also plays Heretic and Hexen)

Reaper, yes - please look and don't ask questions that violate the spirit of the Guidelines (#7). When you ask for "pirate" versions, we have to block such stuff.

Gotta love ID Software for releasing Linux installers for all their games.

theReaper
4th June 2007, 05:41 PM
yeah, they rock, especially since im stuck without windows till my new mobo arrives. quake 4 is crap tho, really laggy it freezes every 10-15 seconds, dunno y, maybe my settings

*edit glxgears behaves the same way, so its the setup somewhere

To both people experiencing lag issues. If you haven't done these already, these may help.
1. Make sure you have hardware acceleration installed for you video card. For my nvidia 6600 I just yum install kmod-nvidia
2. If you are using any desktop effects software, like compiz or beryl, turn it off before playing.

HA! of course, the desktop effects, I think I left my brain at uni for the summer

In response to the q' regarding Quake 4, I bought it day of release (collectors set) and after upgrading my card to A GeForce 7600, I havent had any issues. I have an XP3000+ 2GB Ram and a 7600 256MB setup with at the time FC6. I have done a clean install of Fedora 7 last weekend, but havent gotten around to reinstalling it. WoW runs flawless in Cedega, so I would presume Q4 would run as good as previously.

Other good commercial games with native installers are the rest of iD's software, Heretic 2, Unreal Tournament series, Enemy Territory, Americas Army.

There are a bunch more that work via wine/Cedega, but I think you weren't looking for that :D So if you were look at the compatibility DB's for the respective wine flavor.

Popular ones: Doom3, Quake3, Quake4, Wolfenstein, Enemy Territory, Serious Sam 1 (FE), Serious Sam 1 (SE), Serious Sam 2, Unreal 1 & 2, Unreal Tournaments (I think all of them)...
Those ar FPS that are most played (except for SSFE and SSSE probably)...
Most shooting is of course in SSFE and SSSE, then it goes to SS2... and then others...

...World of Padman: http://padworld.myexp.de/...

Dude, you deserver a trophy or something for that. I've used the padman skin on Q3 for years... I quit following his development as it seemed that he was losing steam. It's awesome to see that he got to release stage. I'm gonna try to grab it tonight!

thanks,

Hi there shess,

Sorry for the dumb question, but did you find install instructs on the site? is it just ./WOP.run ?

As for their servers, in the forum, it's been stated a lot that the servers are empty(no players).

thanks,

Just realized tremulous is in the main repo too. That makes two 3D first person shooters that just require a simple yum install. ;)

$ yum info nexuiz tremulous
Installed Packages
Name : nexuiz
Arch : x86_64
Version: 2.3
Release: 1.fc7
Size : 3.2 M
Repo : installed
Summary: Multiplayer, deathmatch oriented first person shooter

Description:
Nexuiz is a fast-paced, chaotic, and intense multiplayer first person shooter,
focused on providing basic, old style deathmatches.

Name : tremulous
Arch : x86_64
Version: 1.1.0
Release: 2.fc6
Size : 1.5 M
Repo : installed
Summary: First Person Shooter game based on the Quake 3 engine

Description:
Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS
with elements of an RTS.
Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans.
Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS.
These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning.
The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or
other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death.
Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree),
healing functions and much more...

Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on.
As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill.
These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the Armoury
The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe,
the alien is able to evolve into a new class.
The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available.

The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team.
This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also
removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures.

I've been having a lot of fun with WoP... once I figured out you have to zone through that teleporter and tag the wall to score anyways. Updated link for those interested:
http://www.worldofpadman.com/

The 64bit version works fine with F7 BTW.

Since this has turned to a "Games supported on Fedora" thread, I'll feel free to add my recent acquisitions:

.Silent Hunter III, runs nicely under standard installation of Wine, just follow these (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=5618) instructions
.Painkiller, runs ok under Wine, no tweaks needed

P.S. I haven't tried MP, though

These are not native Linux games though.
Plenty of Windows games run on Wine but that's not the subject here.

OpenArena is okay, but Quake III is better.

Nexuiz is very difficult, and it seems very similar to Unreal Tournament 2004 ( Only a lot harder than UT)

I never play Tremulous, it is only Multiplayer.

Also not mentioned here, Rise of the Triad is in the Fedora Repository. It comes with the Demo levels. Not the greatest shooter out there, but you can check it out.

My favourite FPS games, Quake III and Doom run fine on Linux (Except for problems with OSS, that dreaded /dev/dsp/ error), however, all id games rock.

Rise of the Triad was cool ... lots of giblets flying around, and that rocket launcher... :D I played the original DOS version recently using QEMU on the PS3.

Thanks -- on my PS3 (F7 PPC) it has some major graphic glitches and no sound effects. On my F7 x86 system it runs fine.

heretic-shareware runs well on the PS3 ... as well as Hexen and Strife. :D I never really played Strife before, but we used to have long sessions of multiplayer Hexen.

I run Quake 3 with ALSA OSS emulation.

When it comes to Rise of the Triad, Apogge tried to make a Doom, but the engine limitations (still using Wolfenstein) and levels not on par with doom make it look bad in comparison to Doom. But it is a decent shooter, if you do not compare it to its competitor. It was a good step that Apogge/3D Realms droped Wolfenstein and started using Build.

I'ts been a while since I last built Q3 from source... If memory serves me right you can set the driver in the cfg and when built from source is the default.
