My suggestion would be to use only free software in your how-to's and provide links.
I only took a quick look but the fact that the tutorial for preparing your drive for Linux used Partition Magic was quite a turn off considering Gparted is free, offers a live CD and is superior IMHO.
If you're doing tutorials for newcomers than take the opportunity to expose them to some of the great tools freely available to them.

I have written a new guide: How to install Linux on Windows using qemu (http://www.my-guides.net/en/content/view/42/26/)
It expalins how to use qemu in order to install a Linux distribution over Windows XP. This way you can run at the same time Windows and Linux. In case you want to remove the Linux installation you just have to delete the .img file that was created from qemu.
This guide can also be used as a How to install Fedora Core 6 guide since I have screenshots and explaination for any screen you'll see. :)

I would really like to see a howto for custom compiling a kernel to tweak performance. I have looked for such a thing before and have never found one. I would still like to learn how to do it.

Did you try searching here? I wanted to do the same not so long ago and found some really nice ones in the Howto forum.

Yes, I've looked here, and on other forums, and Google. I can easily find howtos for compiling a kernel in general. But I'm actually looking for pointers as to what to change, etc, before compiling to improve performance. I would not want to attempt messing around with the kernel without some kind of intelligent guidance.

Hello axel,
could you put some pointers on how to find files with ls, grep, and find?
I can never figure those out
like maybe I want a list of stuff that starts with "r" so i do a ls r* I get every freaking file that starts with "r" alright and every directory and sub directory to the end of the file system
Ok so I can filter with grep like ls -A|grep r then I get every file with an "r" in it, at least it says in the current directory then I try find yes I man find and man find and man find I can't seem to get it
while I'm at it can I do an ls |grep x>filelist.txt|tail 10 filelist.txt >last10.txt to get a list of the last 10 file is a directory and the I want to do a mv <last10.txt /upleveldir to move the 10 file to a new place?
I know this doesn't work but it seems like I should be able to do something like this. I have been dreging through some bash wizard HOW TO I found on the Internet it keeps tellig me and more about stuff that's interesting enough but I don't think I need to know. I just do simple stuff. See nail, hit nail with hammer, repete, nail seats, stop.
Oh well, Thanks for the other tips. All and any help is appreciated.

Thats bash scripting :)
ls ./r* will list any file starting with r
e.g. http://www.freeos.com/guides/lsst/
It's also getting worked on in the docs project. Do a search on the wiki for the command line and it'll come up with something thats getting worked on. Note it is in draft at the moment.

Well you've got a point on that. Maybe I should consider changing it to su - but then I would have to write too many times now become root or something like that. Anyway I'll think about it and maybe change it.
Thanks leadgoelm. :)

Axel, I had an idea regarding sudo. You could start prefacing the commands that need root access with su -cJust remember to quote your commands.
leadgolem

Just one more thing, if your using su -c and you need to issue a command with an environmental variable then you need to use double quotes, otherwise the variable will not be expanded.

Here I have installed Ubuntu :p but the process is the same for installing any other distribution. I have also tried installing Fedora 9 as guest operating system. I guess this will be solved in a later release. :)

Hey tech291083. Sorry for not replying sooner.
Well you could search google for similar sites and get some ideas. I believe commands should be somehow categorized so that a user can search a command both by its name or by what he wants to do. I think blogspot supports categories for articles, right? :)

I have a couple of Linux books but they do not have that many commands listed in them, so the best way is to search the net which I have been doing for the last couple of years whenever time permits, and the good news is that I have been able to find some of the most useful commands that I have also used so far. Yes, blogspot does support categories. I will soon post more commands on my blog. I will also categorize them soon. Thanks for the suggestion mate, appreciated. bye for now...

PatMcLJr, yeap you can make sudo stop asking each time for the root password. Of course this isn't secure but you decide.
