oh and what are my other options...

ok here is it...I have a dvd drive on an old computer running fedora 5. I want to go to fedora 6. the dvd drive works fine in fedora...the strange thing is upon bootup the dvd doesn't appear to be found by the bios...at least not as far as I can tell. so I cannot "boot" off the fedora dvd however I can see the contents of the dvd (or play a music cd etc) from within fedora 5. so my questions are twofold.

1) is it possible for a dvd to be detected by fedora yet not be detected during the boot process? if not then I am just not finding the dvd in the bios or setting boot order stuff correctly

2) assuming the worst (that the dvd is not seen at boot) what options do I have for getting fedora 6 on this computer. I have another computer networked to it running fedora 6...so is there a way to install from the other computers dvd or to somehow copy the dvd contents to computer 2 and install across the network? thanks...

ps: I have no idea at this point how I got fedora on the machine in the first place :(

I was not able to use FC6 DVD, but FC5.

To install FC6, I use the first two FC6 CDs instead. That works. Then I use Add/Update Software at a later time.

are you saying that by using the cd's on this motherboard you were able to use your cd/dvd use the builtin sound and configure the video (to say 1280x800?). cause for me none of those things worked...I installed off the dvd and never even considered that using the cdrom would make a difference...

I thought you are saying DVD doesn't work, so using the CDs would make it install Fedora. There was some cases where autofs and hal couldn't decide if this was a DVD or CD.

thanks, I can install from the dvd (using linux install all-generic-ide) and use the internet or a command line with no issues...the issue is the built in sound the video (changing its settings) and the dvd don't work AFTER the install. So as I was going to use this pc as my main workstation (as well as a server learning linux) it is basically unusable for me as of right now...:(
