Hello all,
I am kind of a Linux newbie, but desperately trying to learn. :) I did a full install of Fedora Core 6 and am trying to get my serial hardware modem to work through a serial to USB adapter. I know this package comes with FC6, but I can't tell if it's installed and/or active on my system.
Can anyone help? I know that my USB converter & serial modem are OK as they worked on a FC6 install from a totally different computer.
Thanks for any help!

Plug in the usb device and then type the "dmesg" command and see what appears as the last 10 lines or so. Typically the usb serial devices shows up as /dev/ttyUSB0 ....

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the tip. When plug in the USB to serial adapter into my PS3 USB port (running FC6 full install), I get the following message:
usb 1-2.1: USB disconnect, address 10
usb 1-2.1: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 11
usb 1-2.1: configuation #1 chosen from 1 choice
When I plug the serial converter into a USB port on a Intel computer, the converter is detected and I get the following:
usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hdc and address 5
usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
pl2303 2-2: 1.0: pl2303 converter detected
usb 2-2: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyusb0
How come the PS3 isn't detecting the converter? It detects the fact that I plugged it in as a "full speed USB device". Both machines are running FC6 full install.
How do I check if the USB to serial converter module is loaded and running in Linux on my PS3? Perhaps that module wasn't loaded somehow.
Thanks for the help!

looks like the module hasn't been ported to the cell.....?

I installed FC5 specifically compiled for the PS3 (actually, it's PowerPC compatible) and the serial to USB converter module was listed as one of the included modules on the website.
I installed the full version of FC6 on the PS3 and it runs great with the GUI and everything. The converter module should be there, as the module works fine on a full version of FC6 on an Intel computer. Does that make sense? My USB devices (keyboard & mouse) work fine and the DMESG command notices when I plug & unplug the converter.
I think that the serial to USB converter module is there, but I don't know what Linux command tells me what modules are installed or activated.
Thanks for any advice that you can give!

Does the type of USB controller make a difference? The PS3 uses an "ehci_hcd" USB controller and the Intel computer uses a "uhci_hdc" conroller. The Intel computer finds the serial converter just fine.
This webpage talks about activating either the "uhci_hdc" or "ohci_hcd" controllers to properly activate USB support, but doesn't mention the ehci_hcd controller than my PS3 uses. :(
