hi everyone,
on my pc i've installed two different kernels and need both. now i've got a problem with my nvidia drivers (ver 5336 as shellscript), everytime i change the kernel x won't start and i must install the drivers again, then when i reboot the same kernel, everything is fine as long as i don't try the other one ...
it seems like drivers can only be installed for one kernel, but that's annoying!
any ideas appreciated!

I thought that you could use multiple kernels with the Nvidia drivers. I haven't had any problems on my machine with multiple kernels and multiple installs of the Nvidia drivers. How are you installing the drivers? I usually run ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run -x to extract the files, cd to the directory where they get extracted, and run make install from there. I have read about RPMs being available for the different kernel revisions, but I am not sure where they are located right now.

They don't do RPMs any more - the binary is an installer itself. I haven't had any problems with using it to install/update (and re-build itself), but I usually only work with a single kernel. You could try looking on the NVidia forums and see if anyone's mentioned multiple kernels or ask about it yourself...

wow, i've got it! solution was to build only the kernel module, using the command "./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run -K", everything works fine now!
have a good day

See why you should use our nvidia video driver rpm packages instead of the nvidia installer. If you want to give it a try, you probably want to install the kernel-module-nvidia-$(uname -r) package. Be careful, only latest kernel is supported.

My current kernel version is 2.4.22-1.2188.nptl i686, it's the last one of the 2.4 series.
So, in my case, I had to download:
1. kernel-module-nvidia-2.4.22-1.2188.nptl-1.0.5336-0.lvn.3.1.i686.rpm
2. nvidia-glx-1.0.5336-0.lvn.3.1.i386.rpm
Then, I installed them with : rpm -ivh *.rpm
Also, you do not need to drop out of X to perform the installation.
The Livna Nvidia driver RPM comes with a small python script, which works as an extension to redhat-config-xfree86, and does all the editing of the XFree86 configuration file for you.
The only thing is that there are only 2 kernel versions available, 2.4...2174 and 2.4...2188 and they are only for Fedora Core 1.
