I am using FC5, and one of my stereo loudspeakers does not work, but they both work under Windows :(. How do I configure this under KDE? I am a complete ignorant when it comes to sound cards and devices.

Probably it''s a balance problem. Check to see if the balance slider is in the middle position.

Which application controls balance?

Depending on your sound card, it might be "alsamixer" (run this in a konsole) or "KMix" (it's actually an alsa mixer gui).

YES it works in alsa mixer ! Open a Konsole and type "alsamixer" (without quotas of course) then hit enter. It will show a black background with some coloured columnes in it. Select the "Master" column using left/right arrow keys, then use keys q/z for up/down volume on left channel and e/c key for up/down right channel volume, or u can press up arrow key until both channels are leveled an then adjust volume to the level desired (using up arrow key or down arrow key). Exit alsamixer using 'esc' key.
