Well guys i have some god ones here you shall see.

I'm sitting playing Saurbraten whole computer freeze's can't change into a terminal, can't disable the caps lock, keyboard locks me out etc... This has also happened when browsing the internet and while watching a dvd, Obviously the only thing i can go is reboot. get's to the grub, tries to boot the kernel. And then most of the time it just sits there.
I have to switch it off for over half an hour then it works perfectly. Unfortunately the whole computer freezing will cunjour up this nasty boot prob but if i dilligently shutdown and then try to switch it on again it just hangs. as before.

I would like to get this fixed, i have a feeling that there are a vast number of log files somewhere which will tell me exactlly what to fix, unfortunately i'm a n00b, and i really don't know what to do

I know there isn't any actual information in this post so

Just a guess, but could this be a heat problem? Have you tried monitoring your temperature if your system will allow that and have you opened the case recently to free those hibernating dust bunnies? In winter, especially with any animals in the house, it doesn't take long for those fans to start pulling in crud.

I have thought about it being a problem with the heat, but i don't think so. I have the computer in my room and i've had this for about a week now, and in the evening i play some music when i go to sleep, i use as root shutdown -h -time **:** and if i have left the delay for 2 hours i plays away happily and i wake up to a switched of computer.

But as i was posting the first post it crashed, i heard the disk, do a click and a skip, hard to descibe the noise, i quickly managed to press the send button and now a crash, on a friends laptop at the minute. Computer just refuses to boot and it halts on

Red Hat nash version 5.1.19.0.2

Again the disk makes the same clicking sound. I will have to leave it for a few hours until i try again but i have a feeling that it will boot alright.

Test that hard drive with the tools from the manufacturer's site. There's a possibility it's going bad. Of course, many manufacturers have a 3yr. warranty on their drives but you have to run the tool to get a confirmation. In any case, back up your critical data right away since this problem could escalate.

I agree with Bob. First of all, this is a mechanical problem and not due to the OS. I think your HD may be heating up. Try unscrewing it from the bay and just leave it hang from the cable (or prop it on it's side in free air) and run with the side cover off the computer. See if that helps. The HD could just be going bad also.

Well i've cleaned the whole computer now and i'm booting it as i type, and it seems to be alright, hell of alot of dusty came out of the cpu heatsink. Are there any log files anywhere which may shed light on anything. Thx for the replies btw guys

Good on the cleaning. Sure, there's /var/log/messages that might help some and if it were a boot problem, you can check dmesg.

'dmesg' can be from usr, but you should be root (su -) or at least (su) to look at /var/log/messages. No problem on the speed; sitting in the middle of a possible 18" snowfall and my other option is firing up the snowblower...brrrrrr...

Back in feodra for now, have been for about ten minutes, had alook at dmesg, can see a great deal of information. Again the contents of /var/log/ aren't exactlly thrilling reading. I guess the only real test is to play some saurbraten for *hopefully* an extended period of time

btw. i'm really jealous of the snow your having, the sun is shinining in windy windy liverpool for a change

Good for you! Well, if you're envious you might consider that I've spent the last four hours snowblowing and shoveling around the house, then using the roof rake to pull 15" of snow off the roof, dumping it right on where I'd just shoveled. Got time for a break and then back out to take care of the next snowblowing. It's NOR'EASTER TIME!

Man, you're a bit hard to please! :D

d347hm4n: Either heat, an intermittent HDD cable connection, or the HDD itself is giving you fair warning.
