I notice that UT2004 lags very significantly when compiz is turned on. Is there any chance that this problem might be solved?

Use Beryl instead :D

Seriously though, both Beryl and Compiz eat a LOT (and I mean a lot) of resources, I have to disable either (Compiz, Beryl) to play any games. I've noticed that both do quite a bit of stuff in software (i.e, the CPU usage is cosiderable when they perform certain tasks), though generally Beryl is better at staying smooth under load, where as Compiz when you reach CPU usage of near 80% will be all choppy and laggy. It also has a LOT to do with your hardware configuration (it is the case for my modest Gf FX 5900, where as Gf 6x00 and 7x00 have less problems).

I see. I'm using a 7600GS but it's still quite bad when performing certain tasks. When Yumex updates the repos and all, the mouse movements get choppy.

Sounds like DMA might not be on for your HDD, is it a SATA drive?

Nope, that's a problem inherent to Compiz, high CPU load (like python in this case due to both Yum and Yumex) cause this problem. Also building software from source generates this behavior in Compiz. Beryl is MUCH faster (alas, the latest update to it seems more like regression, breaking a lot of things and causing Beryl to use way too many CPU cycles where before it did not).

Hmm. I guess I'll just have to live with it for the time being. I'm not really a big fan of Beryl, I kinda like the simplicity of Compiz.

Not to mention that the high CPU load is just what makes both your system and your games lag when you run anything with GL with Compiz enabled. You can have Beryl to be as simple as Compiz is (but again, that's just a matter of tweaking and preference) I like Beryl better simply due to its superior speed (blazing fast compared to Compiz). Maybe Compiz could "backport" those optimizations from Beryl and be much, much faster than it currently is (and while they're at it, add some more rendering paths too for XGL, nVidia specific optimizations and AIGLX), maybe they're working on them as "we type", and I sure hope so, as I too like Compiz' simiplicity and despise Beryl's config tool (they're doing their best to clean it up, and its noticeable, they're just "not there" yet).
