Instead of keep posting different faults FIX HAL as this is the root of all your problems

hal is working now, well at least it doesn't report any problems on boot.

unless you can tell me a way of checking it for errors that arn't reported?

I have got the same onboard sound card I gave up with trying to get to it function properly ( garbled sound on games and some music files )
This not a fedora fault as I have the same issue with any distro I tried it with , hence the sound blaster which actually sounds better than the onboard card.

Try

su -
modprobe snd_intel8x0

to see if the module is loaded

No compliant would suggest its loaded ok. is it visible in the sound setup settings.

this might be worth checking out as you have a realtek ALC 850

im usung kde so i looked in sound card detection, the test sound would not play, suggesting it is not there, i had a brief look through a link you gave me and ran a play test sound command, result was that the file was not there.

Alsa mixer gives me no error,

i assume this means that the driver is there but it is either a:parts are missing b:it is out of date since my kernel update

but i don't know a great deal as to what could cause it

After checking over everything and re-installing the drivers it still did not work, this left me a little stumped thinking how could it be broken? it's worked fine until now and it's brand new and no bits to be installed wrong!

That is where i was wrong! it would seem that the cable that goes to my front audio panel from my MB had become disconected while installing a front fan. Re-connected, with the new drivers too the sound was perfect!

Thanks for the help and i hope someone benefits from my moment of dumbness :)
