Greetings,

I just bought a Viewsonic VX2235WM LCD monitor and I'm having trouble getting it to work on FC6.

When I connected it up it said the vertical and hortizonal frequencies were out of range, so I connected up the CRT monitor again and used the display screen to change to generic LCD monitor 1680 x 1050 and then restarted with the LCD monitor. It seemed to work for only a short period during the boot before I got the out of range message. I connected the CRT monitor again found it had reverted back to a CRT monitor. I have tried to reduce the CRT display resolution in hopes of getting the LCD monitor working long enough to change to the proper settings, but always get the out of range message. I sure many people have had the same problem. How get you get your LCD monitor working?

Regards,
Dan

Kill the X server with ctrl alt backspace and as root type:

system-config-display

and choose your LCD panel from the list. If it isn't listed then choose a generic LCD of your desired screen resolution.

Edit: Whooaa! If that brings you back to the login screen then use ctrl alt F1 (or F2) and login as root and type system-config-display.

Wayne,

Nothing works. It doesn't seem that system-config-display writes anything to xorg.conf. I modified xorg.conf myself and commented out the vertical and hortizonal frequenies and that at least got the monitor working. However it is stuck at 800x600. I have changed both settings and hardware to change the resolution to 1680x1250 but it seems it stays at 800x600. I have tried to change the "DisplaySize 1680 1250" in xorg.conf and that didn't help. I also changed "Screen" section to 1680x1250 and that didn't help either.

Dan,

First thing to do is look at the cover of the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy where it says "Don't Panic" :D

Second thing to do is tell us what video card and driver you're using. I don't know much about drivers for video but others do and they can jump in and help if there's more info.

Thirdly, I had a little bother like this when I switched from a 15" LCD to a 19" and I took the drastic route of renaming xorg.conf, logging out to a Terminal and running system-config-display and let it rebuild a new xorg.conf. That worked for me.

Here is what I found about the video card.
nVidia Corporation C51 PCI Express Bridge
C51G GeForce 6100

I'm not sure how to find the driver version, but I have all the lastest updates.

OK. Now someone else more knowledgeable can step in. Did you install a third-party driver or are you using the proprietary nVidia driver?

BTW. Don't worry about changing the refresh rates, LCDs work differently to CRTs. If you're really worried though (some folks are) you can comment out the frequencies with hash marks and let DDC do its job like this:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
ModelName "LCD Panel 1280x1024"
### Comment all HorizSync and VertSync values to use DDC:
# HorizSync 31.5 - 67.0
# VertRefresh 50.0 - 75.0
Option "dpms"
# DisplaySize 270 203 # 1024x768 96dpi
# DisplaySize 338 254 # 1280x960 96dpi
DisplaySize 338 270 # 1280x1024 96dpi
# DisplaySize 370 277 # 1400x1050 96dpi
# DisplaySize 423 370 # 1600x1400 96dpi
EndSection

Wayne,

I used the driver that came with FC6. I did have a problem with the cursor
and added the line "HWCursor" "off"

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nv"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "nVidia Corporation C51 PCI Express Bridge"
Option "HWCursor" "off"

If you want you can install the closed source nVidia driver. Instructions have been posted a number of times on the procedure and a quick look back using 'search' will help you there. It might solve your problems but YMMV.

Right, time for food and a cold beer :D

I'm in Big trouble now. I was editing the xorg.conf file and now I can no longer get to the login screen. The system boots to a certain point and the monitor says "No Signal". Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I do now?

Dan

I have the same lcd monitor (http://www.fedoraforum.org/gallery/showimage.php?i=2840&c=3&cutoffdate=all)
here is relevant parts of xorg.conf (you will note that xorg.conf still sees it as "ModelName "Monitor 1280x1024"") I went in and changed it to lcd 1680x1050 and it still revwerts back to monitor, but works fine.

I installed my video drivers through yum, using the livna repository
yum install kmod-nvidia
I suspect that the problem is the nvidia drivers...I think I did get some warnings but not anymore and it never kept me from using the lcd.

Sailor,

Thanks I'll try that as soon as I can get back to the login screen. I need to somehow get to a failsafe terminal or something or maybe something standalone to fix the xorg.conf file.

Dan

I knew I created that Rescue Disc for a reason. I was able to replace the xorg.conf file with a working xorg.conf file and I'm up and running again. I real question now is; should I quit while I'm ahead and take the monitor back to the store or continue to try to get the LCD monitor to work. :D

Hello:
I doubt there is anything wrong with the monitor as Sailor has the same make and model running fine :)
No.1
Make sure your installation is up to date
No.2
Make sure that the entries in system-config-display are correct [Pay attention to what Sailor has for his Monitor in his posted xorg.conf file - he has in denoted in Bold Lettering]
No.3
Open a terminal and log in as root using
su -
yourpassword
then type
gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and copy and paste the relevant sections of Sailor's posted xorg.conf file ... save, exit and Ctrl Alt Backspace to restart your
Xsever
No.4
Do not make any other changes to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
other than what Sailor's xorg.conf file provides for you.
No.5
Look through your /var/log/Xorg.0.log for errors and or warnings that may be relevant to your display not working correctly.
No. 6
Open a terminal and type:
xdpyinfo | grep dimensions
this will show you the true display dimensions - you should also see this as a validated mode in your /var/lob/Xorg.0.log file
and type:
nvidia-settings -q RefreshRate
this will show you the actual refresh rate

Both of these commands may be necessary to run in case your display size and refresh rate is being misinterpreted by system-config-display . [This has been know to happen]

Edit:
If you have not already installed the nVidia drivers you can do so fby using the livna repo : http://rpm.livna.org/
If your card is a more recent model then
yum install kmod-nvidia
If it is an older card then:
yum install kmod-nvidia-96xx
You can verify the card and the driver(s) here:
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-9746/README/appendix-a.html

The LCD monitor is working!!! :)

I don't think I would have ever got it working without your xorg.conf file Sailor, many thanks. Many thanks Wayne for your suggestions and many thanks to Seve for your check list and some new commands for my tool box.

There are two good ways to do it

1) At the grub prompt edit the boot line and add linux 1 at the end
2) Use the DVD or first CD that FC6 was installed from and use the rescue mode. At the propmt to mount partitions, tell it to make them all read/write. At the prompt do:

chroot /mnt/sysimage/

Those will both get you to a workable spot to fix your gaff.

ddan, glad you got it working!...I didn't even know that the xorg was still listing it as a monitor & not lcd, until you asked your question. I would have been tearing my hair out if I had noticed that at first :p

Note: You should *always* make a backup of any "known good" xorg.conf files.
Try "cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.good1" or whatever. If you have a good
config for both "nv" and "nvidia" drivers - save both.

I'm a little puzzled by all your difficulty. My samsung 1680x1050 came up and wa reoognize by the "nv" driver. The xorg.conf file has:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Unknown"
ModelName "Unknown"
HorizSync 30.0 - 110.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 150.0
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

And the /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows ...
(--) NV(0): Panel size is 1680 x 1050

Not me, the nv driver seems to choke on some cards, with Fedora at least it comes up but about 30% of my screen is black on the left side until I install the Nvidia drivers then reboot and it's perfect.
On some distros, I've had to do a text install then DL and install the drivers from a terminal just to get to the desktop.

I have a pair of 7600GS's.

That was a suggestion I gave to the OP early on in this thread, which also worked for me. Doing that and running system-config-display after logging in from a Terminal solved a couple of niggles I had after switching from a 15" to a 19" LCD.

Edit: Actually, in my case I'd also switched from an 8Mb ATI Rage mobility 2x/4x video card to the one I'm using now.

Gentlemen,

Been working with Fedora9 i386 on a Dell M70 and Fedora9 x64 on a Dell M90. In both cases I followed the directions in this thread for installing the Nvidia drivers via the proceedures listed in this thread. In both cases the systems embedded display is working beautifully.

But...

My standard work environment is via a D/Port (port replicator with DVI and VGA, for the M70) or D/Dock (Docking Station with DVI and VGA for the M90), in both cases driving a pair of NEC 19 inch LCD's (1280 x 1024 native at 24 bit color depth). Neither system will drive the external displays when booted while attached to the Port Replicator or Docking Station. The M90 was OS loaded while docked, and was working on the DVI display up until I added the Nvidia drivers.

Modifying my xorg.conf has not worked to date (see attached), and seems to be over-written in any case across boots...

I'm a noob with Fedora and it's graphical interface, but reasonably well experienced with various *nix versions (mostly Solaris) from the command line...
