I have a dual 2.7 g ppc g5 and i have been trying to install linux on my system so that i can run maya 3d and utilize the 64 bit processor in my g5 (only 32 bit maya will run on osx) only i am having the worst luck in installing linux.
The problem is that i can't get past the system grub screen. When i hit enter to begin install at the "boot:" screen the system loads the kernel and then some text flashes and the screen goes completely black.
I don't normally make posts as i think i'm generally pretty savvy at solving my own problems (and i learn more by trial and error) but i've tried everything and wasted some 8+ hours over the last couple of days trying to solve this problem and still nothing. I've burned through 5+ dvds and downloaded linux from 3 different sites (i even tried downloading suselinux) so it is obvious that i am doing something wrong.
What's stranger yet is that i can get the install screen on my older powerbook g4 - and if i check the disk on that system it says that there are problems with the disk. So, i've even tried burning new disks on different systems with different media at varying write speeds (i have been using disk utility) because i thought that there was a problem with my burner.
Is it possible that all versions of linux that i have downloaded so far are faulty? (i've tried bit torrent and mirror sites)
oh yeah- i've also tried some of the additional commands they suggest with boot problems in the faq.
Please someone point me in the right direction.
