Hi,
I was wondering if someone has been able to play any of those games under FC6. What hardware you have? It works fine? jerky? it simply doesn't works? ...

thanks,

both of those games work perfectly fine for me. i also have no issues playing playstation games with epsxe, NWN, etc....

are you an ATI user?

I don't have any problems either to play these games. I have nVidia video hardware and an AMD64 based system, running FC6 x86_64.

As far as I know, it is also possible to run them with ATi hardware, albeit the speed may suffer a bit (or a lot, dpending on the card).

I play both these games ok on my ati card , I find the new driver 8.33 is not as good as the 8.31 for gaming.

Ok. I'll have to check out my Xorg/fglrx configuration to see what's going on.
I have a x64 SMP Pentium IV 3.400, 1 GB ram, ATI X1300 512MB, Ati dirvers 8.33.06.

The problem:
For some reason, when I start Doom3 or Quake 4 the program (not the dedicated server) sigfaults and "nicelly" tries to shutdown, but it changes my screen resolution and crashes my mouse.

Is "composite" mandatory to play these cooooooooool games?

leigh123: are you using GLX instead of AIGLX? it has any relation?

thanks to all,

First of all, do not attempt to run these games with AIGLX or XGL running, or the Desktop effects turned on (or Beryl running for that matter). These games may behave strangely if you do.

When I run these games I disable XGL ( ati doesn't use AIGLX ) . As far as I know you have to run ATI cards with the composite disabled to get proper direct 3D accelerated graphics.
I have run both these game on both 32 bit and 64 bit Linux OS's.

I thoght AMD (ATi) were working on making Composite work with the fglrx drivers? Anyway, that may be another reason why MegaZoide is experiencing problems.

meh.. they work great for me with all the eyecandy enabled.. must be related to sysetm/gfx card or something :)

Must have something to do with the hardware, then, as with my G FX 5900 and A64 2800+ w/1Gb RAM (running FC6 x86_64) I'm not able to launch say UT2004 without the game performing utterly badly with AIGLX and Beryl running. I can run UT99 just fine, though... Doom3 and Quake 4 pose the same problem as UT2004... I know, I don't have the strongest card to power these games anymore, so an update is in order (as soon as I get around to getting a PCI-E based system).

Don't mind ;-) I don't use AIGLX nor GLX because I don't use de "Composite" extension neither, and the X server automathicly reverts AIGLX/GLX to software rendering instead of hardware. Currently, I'm trying to figure out how to setup GLX in order tu use "Composite" and the cool-looking Beryl window manager.

as far as I know, ATI cards work fine with GLX and fglrx, eventhough it seems to be that GLX is not as mature as AIGLX does. AIGLX is for Radeon based cards that don't use fglrx but the ati dri driver from Xorg. I will have to perform an exaustive scan of my hardware and log files in order to pinpoint where's the bug or missconfiguration... I'll try not to blow a circuit in my brain

Thetargos
26th January 2007, 05:41 AM
First off, it is XGL (GLX is an API for OpenGL under X11 ;), in fact the fglrx driver lacks a GLX extension to work with AIGLX [GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap]). Anyway, I won't be pedantic about the details and differences between XGL and GLX (both terms are seemingly confusing as it is), however the reason why ATi does not support AIGLX is due to the lack of that GLX extension, not because they would not support Composite, Damages, et al, X extensions, albeit apparently their support for Composite is not very good.

At any rate, if you aren't currently running any fancy 3D desktop effects and you are not able to run the games, maybe the problem lies in an improperly setup fglrx installation/configuration, which would be rather difficult to diagnose, as if you installed from Livna, you should have a working driver, but maybe not so a configuration, but if you insalled with the installer, then you may have a problem.

Thanks, I guess that there's a problem in some obscure configuration of my system. When possible I will post the terminal error messages from Doom3 and Quake 4, the problem is that Quake 4 freezes my X server and I shall kill the server, so I don't know how to copy & paste the log info.

Thanks for appoiting me the difference between GLX & XGL, yeah it's a bit messy ;-)

Just a finall question, It's possible to deactivate AIGLX in order to prevent loading with the X server?

Thetargos
26th January 2007, 07:14 PM
I'm not familiar with XGL, but AIGLX can be activated or deactivated from the Xorg.conf file, for instance, in my case, I'd simply remove/comment out a line in Xorg.conf:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
InputDevice "cursor" "SendCoreEvents"
InputDevice "eraser" "SendCoreEvents"
InputDevice "stylus" "SendCoreEvents"
InputDevice "pad"
# Option "AIGLX" "true"
EndSection

I have a Wacom tablet, and that's why you see those extra stuff there as eraser, stylus, pad and cursor. To note is the '#' to comment out AIGLX (if I wanted to prevent the X server from using that render path). You can leave the Extensions Section intact (so you can stil use a compositor like xcompmgr, to add shadows and whatnot), or you can remove that too (if you don't need the RENDER and Composite extensions.

Just by looking at the Doom 3 log, here's your problem right here:

GL_RENDERER: Mesa GLX Indirect

You do not have direct rendering enabled, or have AIGLX. That has to be addressed first, in other words, you do not have hardware 3D working properly, i.e, not configured properly. Please post in the Hardware forum for instructions on how to get DRI working with your ATi card.

XOrg log files tell me that the DRI infrastructure has been successfully loaded and running. I can run Celestia, Prboom, Estellarium, Xscreensaver-OpenGL, Quake III Arena... but Doom III/Quake 4 complains that I'm running indirect rendering through Mesa. What's going on?

Hmm, that's strange indeed. I must confess I'm at a loss here, I don't know and can't imagine what could be wrong here.

;-) thanks anyway

If I find a solution I'll post it. Sure!

I have had problems with d3 & q4 and have found installing the shareware-doom sometimes fixes this, I think its because of the deps ("SDL")that it installs.
It might be worth checking?

Leigh, you're a genius! Now that you mention it, Doom 3 and Quake 4 both require a special C++ library which is usually installed onto the same directory as the game itself, could the problem be that the games are trying to use host C++ library? This is due to GCC [constant] ABI changes, so to be able to deploy into a wide variety of Linux systems they had to also ship the C++ library used by the main binary

Is this a solution? I'm having similar problems if not the same.

Edit: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=146114 <--- Solved my problem, thought this might help.

Thanks Leigh123 (and all of you),

but the file you provide in the link doesn't install any SDL library on my system! I'm starting to belief that I got such a real mess of libraries, ati drivers, modules and xservers that maybe the best solution would be to make a fresh reinstallation of the system. oh my

I'll check it right now and tell something, thank you

Could you also post the outputs from these commands

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -F WW

and

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -F EE

I find quake 4 runs better on the linux version once I have it fully tweaked. Since I mainly only play Q4 thats why I was able to switch to Fedora with no worries about missing any games. Nvidia cards run quake 4 better than ati cards though, generally speaking ATI has subpar opengl drivers.
If you want some multiplayer lessons send me a pm and well get together. Ive probably won more FFA games than any other player in the world and I know all the tricks. :)

Hi Leigh123,

aaaaaaaaaaargggg it didn't worked :(

It's really strange my situation. I don't see any apparent errors with my ATI openGL drivers and X installation! But Americas Army, Tremolous, Quake 4 (and 2 and 1 and QuakeWorld clones) and Doom 3 they seem that they don't "recognise" the ATI driver for some reason and they revert to Mesa indirect rendering.

Here are the outputs you mentioned (sorry for the wait, I've been taking exams here at school)

"cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -F WW":

(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(WW) The core pointer device wasn't specified explicitly in the layout.
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
(WW) fglrx(0): board is an unknown third party board, chipset is supported
(WW) fglrx(0): Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" is not used
(WW) fglrx(0): Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" is not used
(WW) fglrx(0): Option "VendorName" is not used
(WW) fglrx(0): Option "ModelName" is not used
(WW) <default pointer>: No Device specified, looking for one...

"cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -F EE":

(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER

and here's the painfull message that outputs doom3:
----- R_InitOpenGL -----
Setup X display connection
dlopen(libGL.so.1)
Initializing OpenGL display
Using XFree86-VidModeExtension Version 2.2
DGA DirectVideo Mouse (Version 2.0) initialized
Free86-VidModeExtension Activated at 640x480
Using 8/8/8 Color bits, 8 Alpha bits, 24 depth, 8 stencil display.
GL_RENDERER: Mesa GLX Indirect

Why? why?? why??? why????

I'll check out again ATI Linux support website, it says something about applications unable to startup OpenGL correctly with the comercial ATI drivers for x64 but it's a bit confusing to me. Another solution I am considerating is to create another partition and install other distro in it just for testing acceleration and games. I thinkl I'll try Fedora 32-bit to see what happens.

thanks to all,

Hi

these entries are unused in your xorg.conf so you can comment them out with a #

(WW) fglrx(0): Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" is not used
(WW) fglrx(0): Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" is not used

#Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals"
#Option "DisableGLXRootClipping"

If you are using the livna driver try this ( it should install the 32 bit libs if not already installed )

su -
yum remove kmod-fglrx* xorg-x11-drv-fglrx*
yum install kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx*
yum update kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx*

reboot
