There must be something wrong with your setup because I just opened two of my GMail accounts with Firefox 1.5.x. Usually I read my GMail in Evolution anyway.

If you really want to update then do as I suggested in another thread and try Switfox

Download the install script for your CPU and run it as root and it will download Swiftfox and install it to your /opt directory and make a menu entry for you. You may need to open the script with the text editor first and add this line to the bottom of the section called '# Search for plugins' otherwise you'll have to copy over your plugins yourself.

sudo cp /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/* swiftfox/plugins

Don't forget to make the script executable.

the most easy way is to dowload the archived firefox 2 from Mozilla's site ,then extract it, and create a launcher to the file "firefox" which you find in the extracted folder
also you can make this new one as your default web browser by going to the menu System/preferences/More Preferences/Preferred Application , and set Web browser to be Custom then in the command bar write the path of your downloaded versoin (as an example this is mine /home/common/firefox/firefox %s)
Hope it Helps

I wonder if this is similar to the problem we had with Firefox and secure servers some months ago? As I recall the problem there was a broken dependency, so updating Firefox failed to update nss, which was needed to communicate with secure servers. I don't use G-mail, so can't say what libraries/plug-ins Firefox might need, but you could try removing and re-installing Firefox, in case something didn't install first time around. Meanwhile, anyone familiar with G-mail/Firefox have any thoughts?

Have you got cookies turned on or off? Have you changed something on the Advanced > Encryption tab in Preferences?
