My first post, I apologize if I could find this info elsewhere, but I have searched and searched with no answers...

I installed FC5 on a dell D620(14.1 inch widescreen). I used the 915resolution patch to achieve 1280x800 resolution. The problem is this...I can login as the non-root user and it works fine, but when logging in as root, the login procedure freezes and then eventually returns to the login screen. If I go to command line and remove the 915resolution patch, I can login as root just fine. What is the patch doing that could cause this? And I know I shouldn't login as root, its a long story, but there are reasons. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hello:
Did you use yum to install the
915resolution-0.5.2-3.fc5.i386.rpm

I did not use yum to install the patch, i just downloaded the tar.gz file, untarred it and installed manually. Could installing the rpm make a difference?

thanks for the quick reply :)

Hello:
It's always best to use the pre-compiled fc rpm if you have a choice.
It is available through Fedora extras
So remove the previous tar.gz and use yum to install the 915resolution-0.5.2-3.fc5.i386.rpm and hopefully you should have better results. :)

After uninstalling 915resolution and reinstalling with yum, I get the exact same response. The fedora login screen has the correct 1280x800 resolution, and I can login with a non-root user. Trying to login as root still gives me a 10-20 second freeze, then the screen flashes black, and then returns to the login screen. Root password has been checked, so thats not the issue. Login at command prompt and removing the patch allows root to login successfully, with very ugly resolution. Any idea what the patch may be accessing or modifying that could cause this? thanks again...
