Hello,

I have a brand new system that I built as follows:

Intel Classic Desktop Board DG965RY
Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 @ 2.4GHz
2x 1GB G.Skill F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ
Seagate SATA HDD

When I boot from the install media, I get stuck at "Probing PCI hardware (bus 00)" and that's where it hangs forever.

Just for fun I attempted to install Windows, and I get a blue screen of death.

Definitely sounds like a hardware problem, but where? I disconnected everything but the floppy drive and it boots fine to a floppy disk with DOS on it. I reconnected everything and it boots fine to the DOS floppy too.

I can surf the BIOS screens to my heart's content.

I just can't seem to be able to install any operating system.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

Thanks,

Mike

Hello:
A couple of things you may want to try.
Check and see if there is a newer BIOS for you board, if so you may want to update it.
Likely you are not the only one who has experienced this and as such there may be a BIOS fix released?

As well, check to make sure your BIOS is set to setup defaults or failsafe defaults and give it a whirl again.

This is something I found that may help you: To get past the "Probing PCI hardware bus 00" hang, you need to boot with "pci=nommconf" on the kernel cmdline on the 965 systems. Also, the series boards will install if you change the sata mode to legacy.

If that doesnt work then look at this guide, it may give you more hints: http://www.oakcourt.dyndns.org/~andrew/dg965ry.html

Sounds more like a memory problem if you can not install windows as well, Back off on the cas latentency and memory timmings as well as RAM speed and see if that helps

> a newer BIOS for you board

I tried downloading a BIOS update from Intel's website. I downloaded the ISO image, made a bootable CD, and it didn't work. The DG965RY is fairly new and I don't think it needs a BIOS update.

> pci=nommconf

This got me a little further with the Linux install, but it still didn't get very far at all.

> Sounds more like a memory problem

Turns out this is the right answer.

> Back off on the cas latentency and memory timmings as well as RAM speed and see if that helps

I don't know what this means (latency and memory timings and RAM speed). I only have the two sticks that I bought, that will fit in this computer.

I removed one of them and it didn't work. I replaced it with the other one, and it installed a Windows OS just fine.

Appears I have a bad stick. I'll be getting a replacement.

Thanks to all for your quick help on New Year's Eve!
