Hey all,
I need to buy a new NIC for my linux box. I'm running FC6. I don't need anything fancy (although 1000 throughput is nice) but I want something where the drivers are already built into linux and it will be effortless to install into my system. My current system has the Abit AB9 Pro MOBO in it and I have had nothing but trouble with the NICs so I'm looking for something to simply replace them. Just something cheap on Newegg would be so helpful.
Thanks for the help,
-John

newegg.com has a Rosewill for ~$4 listed as working with Linux.

I bought that one, plugged it in the computer, Fedora found it on the boot, no problem. Works great. I've had it for several months now. Also, Newegg has great shipping, even if you don't pay for special shipping, it will come to you fast.

if you've got a frys electronics near you, i can heartily recommend these:
http://airlinkplus.com/networking/agiga32pci.htm
they're based on a realtek 8169 *gigabit* chip, so just plug'n'play, they're pretty small cards too, so may be good for a mini-itx box (i've actually got a couple of these to fit in a 2u server case by just taking the pci cover off).
generally fry's have them for about 7usd (not 20usd outpost have them for) i've had them as low as 4usd in a sale before.
they've worked a treat for me on various machines, rh9 to fc6 (and slackware 10) and in fact are slightly faster than my intel pro 1000ct onboard and more reliable than a bunch of 3coms i tried.
as far as i can remember, these support jumbo frames and auto mdi/mdix (i.e. you can link two machines without a switch/hub using straight OR crossover cable) and wake-on-lan (but no boot prom).
EDIT: it seems all of the following cards have the realtek 8169 chipset too, and seem to retail at around 7-12ukp in england....
netgear ga311
dynamode NC1000TX-G
Hawking HGA32T
dlink DGE-528T
some people say they have had problems with the rtl-8169 driver prior to kernel 2.6.10?
