benchmarking isn't easy
what are you trying to achieve?

Well, my friends has a PS3 and I would like to compare speeds on the PS3 to my 1.86Ghz laptop.

You aren't going to be able to make any meaningful comparisons due to the Cell processor and your laptop processor having radically different designs.
For example the laptop processor is probably faster at integer maths but the Cell will be much faster at streaming floating-point operations. That's before considering whether or not any particular code has been optimised for the particular CPU it's running on.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking when I read that. It's definitely not a fair comparison since these systems have been designed for different purposes, so while the results you get might not mean much in the end, it would still be interesting to see what you come up with.

But I would say at least run something that's been optimized to some extent on the PS3, since from what I've seen regular distros tend to run a little on the slow side.
