After you boot up the installation disk, try enter the following:
linux all-generic-ide irqpoll
This work for my Intel DG965RY motherboard. I don't know why but it seems that the kernel cannot recognized very well with the IDE chipset and it have some problem with IRQ. After you successfully installed your system, please make sure you also have these 2 parameters in the file /boot/grub/grub.conf, otherwise your system cannot boot up.
After installation, I observed that without the "all-generic-ide", there will be a kernel panic during the boot up process, withtout the "irqpoll", there will be a problem in SATA disk (hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status=0x24).
Can anyone explain this? and better can anyone fix this?
Thanks a lot.
Although the sytem can run with these 2 parameters, but I have experienced another 4 problems:
(1) The following message always appear in dmesg and in console
hdi: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x01). Trying to recover by ending request.
(2) gnome is very unstable. I always experience a sudden system halt (sometimes about 3-4 hours, somestime just a few minutes).
(3) The system seems running slower than Fedora 5, I load eclipse just after starting gnome and booting up the system, the time taken to load eclipse very (sometimes, it takes a few minutes) but the faster time still slower that that in Fedora 5.
(4) During shutdown, I observed the following message, but don't know why.
alsactl: get control: 149, cannot read control information... (sorry, I am not fast enough to copy the message)
So, now I am very unhappy with the system, can anyone help me to solve them?
Thanks a lot.

Try to enable AHCI instead of IDE in your BIOS.

I had to enable ahci for the my sata drive on the intel d945gnt. His Mother Board is a faster upgraded version and needs the same setting.

After you boot up the installation disk, try enter the following:
linux all-generic-ide irqpoll
i had added one more pci=nommconf
this was sugested by someone who succeeded in installing linux (FC6) when i was struggling with no linux
sys spec: intel 2 core duo intel DG965 RY 250 SATA

After you successfully installed your system, please make sure you also have these 2 parameters in the file /boot/grub/grub.conf, otherwise your system cannot boot up.
i did not add these when i had the chance to during installation (grub conf i think)
i can boot but no DVDROM
After installation, I observed that without the "all-generic-ide", there will be a kernel panic during the boot up process, withtout the "irqpoll", there will be a problem in SATA disk (hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status=0x24).
it complains about IRQ 139 nobody cared!but still boots

i get this abt alsactl error even during boot.
i have no sound. i was relieved so much to get a linux going that i never bothered. :)

Did you check the Intel web site for bios updates?

Hi, I have new findings and I am sharing my findings with you all.
My system configuration:
Intel Core 2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz
Intel Desktop DG965RY Motherboard (on board 4 SATA IDE interface and 1 PATA IDE interface)
1GB DDR2 533 Memory
NEC DVD RW
I have updated the BIOS to the latest one (MQ96510J.86A.1577.2006.1115.2351), but no improvement.
I have updated the kernel to kernel-2.6.18-1.2868.fc6.i686 (released on 18Dec2006). Then the system can boot without the parameters all-generic-ide and irqpoll. But another problem comes. The system cannot recognized any IDE CD-ROM/RW or DVD-ROM/RW in the PATA.
The sudden random system halt (hang) is gone.
If I boot this kernel with the parameters all-generic-ide and irqpoll as before, the same problems as before exist. And I have the following observations.
(1) The message
hdi: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x01). Trying to recover by ending request.
is displayed in console in a random interval of time. I found that it is issued by haldaemon. If I stop haldaemon, or kill the process "hald-addon-storage: polling /dev/hdi", it is never displayed again.
(2) The sudden random system halt (hang) (I have experienced it in gnome and also bash) is caused by the existence of a IDE CD-ROM/RW or DVD-ROM/RW in the PATA (I have tried another DVD RW and another CD RW). If I disconnect the IDE cable from the device, the system becomes stable.
(3) The bad performance of eclipse is gone when the DVD-ROM/RW is disconnected from the PATA.
(4) The audio card driver ... It has sound. In gnome, the volumne control show only the volumne but no other channels. Running alsamixer return this message
alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument
During shutdown of the syatem, the following message is observed
alsactl: get control: 149, cannot read control information '2,0,0,Capture Volume': Invalid argument
I have found similar posts in http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-134437.html and http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?mode=hybrid&t=136417
Can anyone help to solve them?
I have the following guess:
The Drive Configuration in BIOS setting have an option of Configure SATA as IDE or AHCI. (I have set it as IDE, and I have upgrade from FC5 to FC6).
The kernel before kernel-2.6.18-1.2868.fc6.i686 always assume AHCI for SATA hard disk so that's why I have to use all-generic-ide parameter to tell it to use IDE.
Am I right?
Thanks

Hi jasonfireup,
What do you mean by "try to update the latest bios of the motherboard, but can't update'?
I can update the BIOS, but it does not solve the problem.
Don't blame Intel for providing the useless BIOS. From my observations, I guess the problem is not related to the BIOS, there is a bug in the kernel.
I hope there is anyone who can help to solve the problem
Thanks.

I have kernel 2.6.18-1.2868 with only the parameter "all-generic-ide" and I don't have any problems related to the DVD drive. I don't understand why it appears as /dev/hdi on your machine, it should be /dev/hda. Maybe it's related to the wrong setting for SATA drives. You should set the SATA controller in AHCI mode.

problem is with the mobo.
it has no PATA support
the only "PATA" connector is really an "emulator."
so these are not recognised.
when you pass the all-generic-ide option all connections not configured are taken to be ide and so dvdrom works.
i have two installtaions
one where i failed to give the all-generic- irqpoll option as boot parameters.
this installation is stable but no sound and no dvd rom :)
the other where i gave these params as boot options.
it has hung five times in two days.
has dvd rom but no sound.

i had this curious thing in one of the first installtion.
ther ewas a usb flash drive in the usb port and during install i was asked the partition table in device sda can not be recognised and do i want to wipe all the data in it.
i panciked and said no.
then it went on to find this hdi drive and listed all the partitions right.
it wiped all the data in the flash drive.
in later installations i removed the flash drive during install and no such problem.
it says it is sda

I don't understand why it appears as /dev/hdi on your machine, it should be /dev/hda.
My BIOS setting is
Drive Configuration
ATA/IDE mode ............. Native <Native/Legacy>
Configure SATA as ........ IDE <IDE/AHCI>
The same setting in Windows is OK, and there is a message in BIOS saying that only Windows Vista support AHCI. This is my first time of using SATA drive. I upgraded my system from an old machine by copying all stuff from my old IDE hard disk (FC5 installed) to the new SATA drive. And then upgraded to FC6 after 2 months. In my configuration, /dev/hda to /dev/hdh is reserved for SATA drives (Intel said that the motherboard has 4 SATA and 1 PATA interface), so that's why the DVD drive is /dev/hdi.
You should set the SATA controller in AHCI mode.
Do you mean I should chnage my BIOS setting from IDE to AHCI? This is a difficult task at this moment because all stuffs in the hard disk will be erased and reinstalled. It seems that now the updated kernel kernel-2.6.18-1.2868.fc6 can regonize the SATA configured as IDE (previous kernel cannot) but it cannot recognize the DVD drive. Should I wait until the kernel can fix this problem? (Since Windows runs well with this configuration).
Thanks

same problem but no sound!
When I configure mplayer, mplayer report that it cannot find any alsa, but it found oss. I think maybe this is why I have sound but you don't. But I found that only alsa packages are installed. The OSS is there may be because I have upgraded from an old machine which have been upgraded from FC2, FC3, FC4 to FC5 and then now to FC6. Do you know how I can found where the OSS is and how to remove it?
one where i failed to give the all-generic- irqpoll option as boot parameters.
this installation is stable but no sound and no dvd rom
Is "Configure SATA as IDE" in your BIOS setting? Mine is, and markkuk said that you should set it as AHCI.
I observed that with this setting, kernel before kernel-2.6.18-1.2868.fc6, without the all-generic-ide and irqpoll option result in kernel panic during system boot. kernel-2.6.18-1.2868.fc6 boots OK and is stable but no DVD drive.
the other where i gave these params as boot options.
it has hung five times in two days.
has dvd rom but no sound
I have experienced that it hang more than five times a day.
To me, it seems that kernel-2.6.18-1.2868.fc6 has fix something in this issue. So I still hope that the kernel can fix this problem without having me to change the setting to "Configure SATA as AHCI".
Thanks

The same setting in Windows is OK, and there is a message in BIOS saying that only Windows Vista support AHCI.
That's not true. I have Windows XP installed and it works, you need to use a floppy to install the AHCI driver during Windows installation.
It seems that now the updated kernel kernel-2.6.18-1.2868.fc6 can regonize the SATA configured as IDE (previous kernel cannot) but it cannot recognize the DVD drive. Should I wait until the kernel can fix this problem?
Support for the Marvell PATA controller is expected to be in kernel 2.6.20: https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2006-November/msg06053.html

I just build a system using G965 chipset with FC6 install, no problem while installing, but once in a while do get the "The drive appears confused" message on regular interval.
I shut down the HALd, seems to fixed the problem. Since it wasnt my computer, didnt have time to do more tests on it.
Hardware config:
MB: ASUS P5B-VM
CPU: D6300
RAM: 2x512 DDR-II 6400
This MB uses JMicron 363 RAID/JBOD controller for the IDE and SATA. The problem is Intel have removed the ATA controller from its 965 ICH8 chipset, so in order to have ATA controller for CD/DVDROMs and IDE HDD, the MB have to use an external controller to interface with the south bridge, and that cause a number or compatibility / stability issues.
It is known that if you try to boot up the system using Win98 floppy, the chance are you wont see the CD/DVDROM at all, because the oakcdrom.sys is not compatible with such configuration.
Also there have been many complains about slow / unstable / corrupted burning even under windows enviroment with official native drivers.
Dont think much can be done untill this hardware architecture is more mature so there is a firmware upgrade or Intel release some properly supported drivers.

The JMicron 363 chip (http://www.jmicron.com/Product_JMB363.htm) isn't part of the G965 chipset and it isn't manufactured by Intel, so Intel isn't responsible for any problems with it.

For those who need Linux up an running on their Intel 965, Core 2 Duo systems right now, I can confirm that SuSE 10.2 works without the need for any patching. I've installed 10.2 on a DG965WH board, with an E6400 Core 2 Duo processor, 2 G of memory, and nVidia 7600GT graphics. The only drawback is Novell's 3D desktop (which uses indirect rendering in OpenGL, and is a resource hog); but this is easy to turn off.

I too have an ASUS P5B-VM motherboard (G965 chipset) and have experienced many of the same problems others have experienced. I have given up trying to use a DVD burner on the built-in IDE. I have a second IDE controller in this system and the DVD burner doesn't work on that controller either so something is really goofy with this motherboard. This same controller and DVD burner work just fine in my old AMD Athlon based system. On this motherboard I get IDE errors and intermittent hangs. I removed the DVD burner and put it in a IEEE1394 enclosure and it works just fine in that. Oddly enough the DVD burner worked just fine installing FC6 in the first place.
Has anyone tried to get more than 2G of RAM in a G965 based system? I have been unable to get 4GB to work at all. There appears to be a problem with the memory remapping feature in the BIOS that needs to be enabled to see the 4G of ram. memtest86 finds errors within seconds any time the memory remapping feature is enabled. ASUS tech support blames the RAM yet I've tried two sets of RAM from two manufacturers BOTH from their supported list out of the manual and they BOTH fail memtest86 with the memory remapping feature enabled. Right now I'm running just fine without the memory remapping enabled but the system can only see 2.8G of the 4G installed.
I like the performance of the Core 2 Ultra but this motherboard/chipset has been a royal pain.

Hi, the following problem is fixed after I apply the kernel update (kernel-2.6.19-1.2895.fc6)
And the following is nothing related to kernel or alsa driver
When I configure mplayer, mplayer report that it cannot find any alsa
From mplayer's configure.log, I found that mplayer cannot find asoundlib.h which is in the package alsa-lib-devel. So mplayer reported it can find alsa after I install this package.
Thanks

I browsed through this thread and found few things regarding IDE/PATA/ATA
my computer's Specification:
Intel 3.2GB pentium hyper thread CPU
Intel Desktop Board DG965RY (ALL in ONE)
Seagate Harddisk Parallel ATA 80GB
lite on DVD combo drive
512MB RAM
I tried above method as well that is to pass parameters as such in linux install:
linux all-generic-ide irqpoll pci=nommconf
then the harddisk and dvdrom was detected as hdi and hdj respectively. but the problem was at last step to install. after(formating / filesystem)-->(copying install image to harddisk)-->(Preparing to install. this may takes few minutes)*
*this is where the system hangs until we reset the machine. I dont think this is the problem of board.
Is it that FC6 was not made compatible with this board with old harddisk(PATA) ?????????
If i cannot install linux in this machine then i must get back to older board to use it. I cannot use computer without linux in it.
The live CDs of different distros also do not get run in this machine(its after and before i tried the parameters said earlier).
linux all-generic-ide irqpoll pci=nommconf
no effect.

Before you go further, please visit the intel web site, downloads area and look for possible bios updates for your mother board. Intel may have a bios update that includes new linux/universal operating system support.
If there are none for your motherboard, then review the bios settings to make sure that they are correct. In fact, set them to default values and then try one of the Fedora live cd's. If it works, try linux rescue. It should find your linux system on the hard disk, and even allow you to switch to it.
Do try this and let us know what you experienced.

I have a PC with the following hardware:
Core 2 DUO E6600
Intel DG965WH MOBO
3G RAM
4 SATA drives
2 PATA CDROM/DVD drives
1 USB CDROM/DVD drive
I have just updated the BIOS
I have FC6 that I installed with kernel 2.6.18. and can't see the 2 IDE CD's. I just updated to kernel 2.6.20 and still can't see the IDE CD's.
I have SUSE 10.2 installed with kernel 2.6.18 and can see and use all three CD's
I have also installed FC7 Test 2 with kernel 2.6.20 and it can see all 3 CD's
The difference that I see between the two Fedora installs is that when I look at IDE controllers with the hardware browser FC6 shows the 2 SATA controlers and FC7 also has PATA port using a pata-marvell driver.
When I try to find that driver, "yum install pata-marvell", i can't find it.
does any one know where I can find It and when I do how to install it.

Add the parameter "all-generic-ide" on the FC6 kernel command line in /boot/grub/grub.conf. The "pata-marvell" driver isn't available for FC6.
