This is my first post on this forum and my 2nd linux installation, so am very new to this.

I have run into a few issues that i have been trying to battle through but have got a little stuck, the main one being setting up my graphics card, which i beleive to be a NVIDA Geforce 6600GT agp 8x.

Basically i am trying to get dual view set up and get the desktop nvidia toys on so i have more fancyish buttons to press at.

I looked through the forum and found a post with a command in which i pasted into a terminal and ran, it all seemed to go ok and i assume it was a different driver for the card, until i re-booted. On the boot screen it then said unable to allocate nvidia kernal v 2.6.18.1.2849 (or something along the lines of) :(

I then had to go through some options to get the x server to work, which it finally did. then the above warning did not come on upon re-boot.

Then when i changed to dual view the x server would not start again? im a little unstuck here and any help is well appreciated.although it needs to be simple to understand pls, unfortunately until present i have been a windows user!

Also is this card any good for gaming or is an upgrade worthwhile to save all this hastle?

Thanks

Do you have the nvidia settings menu option?

Applications --> System Tools--> Nvidia Settings

make changes here and save to xorg.conf

if you do not have the menu option it appears that you do not have the nvidia rpm installed

The menu is there but it only gives me 5 options, as follows:

Enable tool tips,
Display status bar,
Slider text entries,
Include x display names in the config file,
Show "really quiet?" dialogue,

These are all check boxes.

I changed to dual view through, Applications --> Administration --> Display, which worked until i rebooted. then the x server problem popped up.

i have a feeling i may have made a boob of the setup process, this is the first time i have used the linux terminal.

Is the nvidia menu that i have correctly installed or is that simply the only options i can get for my hardware? seems a bit lame thats all.

you'll need to use the nvidia configuration tool to set up dual display or Twinview the system-vconfig-display crashes with nvidia cards

for the nvidia menu on the left click the second option and o nthe right there should be the option to configure TwinView

There is only the one option on the left,

Nvidia - settings configuration, i was not aware there should be more.

The title of thie window is nvidia x server settings, is this the correct window as it is the only nvidia item that i could find.
