I use an Inspiron 8600. It has one built-in ethernet and the IPW2200.
At home, I just use the wired connection and it's configured for DHCP. It works just fine.
At work, however, I use two network devices on my laptop. The first is the wired but the second is a USB Pegasus adapter. I have no trouble making it work as I want either. (I set up a fixed IP address, gateway and all that, and also set up a routing rule for my regular LAN connection as well.) It all works fine. So here's the problem!
I go home and there's no USB network device. So I'm guessing that the hardware detection thing that happens at boot time sees no USB network and removes the configuration. And when I get back to the office, it sees the USB network device and starts to use it again, only it's set for DHCP... a fresh "default" network config. The system sees the USB network device as a new device and doesn't see it for what it was and restores the old configuration.
I have noticed some hints about "hardware profiles" but I don't have a clue how to use them. So here's the question:
How do I make the system keep my "eth2" config information even though the device is not present half the time? Is the solution to use these different profiles? Is there a way to prevent the hardware detection thing from removing my eth2 configuration when eth2 is no longer present?
