When I logout and shutdown my FC6 x86_64 machine down (the machine is a laptop),
the hard drive makes an unhappy sound.
It's the same sound when you just hold the power button down to shut the machine
down. I'm not sure if the hard drive head is being properly parked, etc.
Anybody have the same problem? Know a solution?

My desktop has a hard drive that periodically makes a buzzing noise when it is booting , but I haven't had any problems yet. It has been making noise for months.
You might want to consider a backup solution if you don't already have one.

May be OK, may not. I suspect not. In either case, back up your data now. Hard drives don't heal.

The machine is BRAND NEW and the hard drive is totally silent when the
machine is on. When I shutdown under Windows, or unmount the hard drive
and shutdown the machine under a Linux live CD, the hard drive is virtually
silent.
Only when I shut it down under FC6 x86_64 does it make a "plonk" sound
when I shutdown.
Anybody have any clues?
