View Full Version : Happy with FC6, want to get rid of dual boot

Hello,
I have been very happy with FC6 and the help here at the forums. This place is a great resource for help and tutorials.

Now I want to make a full install and no Windows now. Am I safe to use this option when installing
Remove all partitions on selected drives and create default layout
This will remove everything on my drive and start fresh correct? It will remove Windows and the FC6 I have now.

The only problems I am having is my printer which is a paperweight and trying to get my ATI card to work properly. I think I may have messed some things up trying to get my video card to work how I think it should. Buying a new Epson printer is no problem, but I think my ATI Radeon 9800 should be very good for 3D stuff and maybe Beryl too. Right now Beryl slows everything down and sometimes crashes. I was just playing around with it to see the capabilities of my video card. I think it should preform very good for this.

Do I have any options to remove Windows without doing a full install? It is no problem if I have to. I think I have enough info from my questions in getting all the things I want to work again. Should be easier the second time around ;)

Any suggestion to add Repos when installing with correct name and URL, or just leave that for later when the OS is installed? Lets see here, I think that is it unless someone has any advice. Thanks again for the help here. Looking forward to be Windows free!!

Morning Snoopy,

Oh yeah! Good to hear you're getting along with FC6!

Let's see. To answer these (that I can) Let's take them a bit randomly. (That's how I think :p ) First) Yes. You can use gparted or qparted to destroy only the Windows partition, and then format it as a vfat or FAT32 partition for use as storage. Or you can use the gparted live CD to do the same. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

Second) I would not recommend adding any repos at install, and I would not recommend enabling "EXTRAS" in the process either. If you have a high speed connection, these are a cinch to add after you're up and running.

Now I want to make a full install and no Windows now. Am I safe to use this option when installing
Remove all partitions on selected drives and create default layout
This will remove everything on my drive and start fresh correct? It will remove Windows and the FC6 I have now.

Correct! This will essentially wipe the drive clean, then install FC6. However! If you are going to use a single drive, or a dual internal drive system, I recommend using the custom partitioning method, and avoiding LVM in favor of the older style ext3 partitions. It makes the system MUCH more flexible later on.

Hmmm. Then I'm betting you know about the Anaconda kernel problem. If not, before you update anything, after install, search the forum using the search term "Snake Bit" or Snake Bite". That'll get you to the simplest method I know of to fix the kernel. Then you can DL and install the Livna.org ATI video drivers. But... only use the livna ATI drivers. If you use the drivers from ATI, it'll bork the flexibility to switch back to your old (built in) radeon drivers. I use a nVIDIA card, so I can only be of limited help with the ATI stuff. But, FIrewing1 has an excellent howto for ATI cards.

If you're not completely sold on Epson, and are going to buy a new printer anyway, I recommend getting an HP all-in-one. They are generally very well supported in Linux by the HPLIP drivers included in the kernel. Just decide on a model number, then search the forum using the model number as a search term. That'll give you an idea of compatibility. BTW, again Firewing1's HPLIP thread is a fantastic resource!

From the massively cluttered desk, here at The Tangled Web... Good Luck! And have fun:p

Ok thanks for the info.

Correct! This will essentially wipe the drive clean, then install FC6. However! It makes the system MUCH more flexible later on.

HHHHmmm.... The custom partition option is where I have to set it up? I do not think I am quite able to do that yet. I have a single drive. I tried custom partition on a different distro and I messed things up very bad!! I can give a whirl though, what do I have to lose anyway. I want Windows GONE!!! So if I have to do it again, I will. Try try again until you succeed, and if you don't succeed, you wasted a whole bunch of time trying something you can not do! :p (from Hey Arnold!)

Like I said if I botch it up no problems, I just want a clean install and I will try whatever I need to do to make this successful.

Bork is right! I will not try that one again. The Livna drivers worked good, but I still had to mess around and try to install the ATI driver from ATI. Is my 9800 Radeon capable to run Beryl with the Livna drivers? I do not know because I installed Beryl after I borked my system :)

OK thanks again for the help. Will be doing a fresh install soon. Any advice from the custom partition?

Right now I have a Dell A940 printer and some members here suggested a Epson printer as well as the HP. HP cartridges are expensive though.

Well, if you're only going to do a complete wipe, then run just one drive, and don't look forward to trying to add, subtract, shrink or expand the default partitions, then just let Anaconda do the default setup. It's easiest and fastest. I think the custom stuff is kind of a knee jerk geek reaction on my part. I'm always trying to futz and fiddle, and LVM (Quite rightfully) resists that kind of silly behavior! :D

Dan

EDIT: I'm an HP printer fan myself... They work for me... and it's a lot easier to spell.

If you're thinking about an Epson printer it might be worth looking at their Avasys site for Linux drivers. I'm using one with my Epson D68, and it gives access to the ink level readout, rather useful with 4 cartridges, and something I never got working under escputil!

I am up and running again :) I am playing videos, mp3's, wireless connection, got the flash plug-in working, installed the xscreensavers and they all seem to be working very good, Beryl is working, a little slow down but not to much. I did not do anything with the my ATI driver for the 9800 Radeon, I left it just how it was installed.

Now I need to install Real Player because I use it at a site for a live stream, and also hopefully I can play rm and ram files and all the Real media stuff.

Java seems to be a problem for me as well. I try to follow the tutorials, but I can not find the JSE2 download. It does not detect Java when I try to verify installation. Of course I have not installed anything yet, but Java is installed with FC6 correct?

Thanks for all the help. I will be playing around yet to get some more things working. Hopefully buy a printer this week too.

Ok Snoopy! Glad the worst is behind you! So, go to:http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and select: Linux RPM (self-extracting file)
(filesize: 15.74 MB)

Then follow these instructions, and you should be in business!

(Disregard the first line. You just did that!)

Excellent :)
I now have Real Player and Java installed and working. I removed Totem because it was messing up my live stream. Now when I type in about: plugins all the stuff I had is missing now except Real Player G2 and Java.
All my media players work as far as I know still. I played mp3's and tried a DVD and they worked. Should I install the codecs again?

Question about the the live stream I want to watch. I have a subcription at a website to watch live prayers and religious programs from Saudi Arabia. You have to click on the link and then it asks what you want to open with and it has to be Real Player. The only thing I could navigate to is the Real Player bin file. On my Windows system Real Player is the default and I click open and then it asks for my username and password. This does not work for me in Linux. It does nothing at all. Do I have to create a launcher for this? or will installing the codecs again will reslove this problem. My wife Is from Egypt and this is really important for her and me as well. It is nice to use the Linux machine in our room to escape the kiddies and have some quiet time to enjoy these programs. How can I find the Real Player app instead of the bin file? Would that cure the problem? If you want and if you have Real Player I can give you the wesite because there is another section you can watch Real Media files without logging in. That does not work for me now too.

This is really great, I am so happy to get all these things working today. Wirelees took me days before to get to work, and today it was a little problem but I got it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for the help. You have helped me so much today. I really love Linux so much more then Windows.

Can't help you with Real Player, Snoopy. I don't use it. Never installed it. Glad the rest is up and going for you though. Try Nick, or Jim. Either one should be able to get you fixed up!

do you have mplayer installed?
rpm -qa | grep mplayer

if the above command doesn't spit anything out you can install with

yum install mplayer mplayer-fonts mplayer-skins mplayerplug-in

you'll need at least freshrpms repo installed to grab the above files
you can install the freshrpms release rpm from here

http://zod.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=118
or alternately

from the terminal

wget http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/fedora/linux/6/freshrpms-release/freshrpms-release-1.1-1.fc.noarch.rpm

then rpm -ivh freshrpms-release-*.rpm

Thanks for the help. I installed mplayer, then I deleted the rm in.so file in the Mozilla plugins and then I was able to save the link I need to the desktop to get the live stream in Real Player. Today has been an excellent day! All I need is a printer this week and I am fully functional.

Would you happen to know if you can use Windows Media Recorder in Linux? It is an exe file and I have purchased the program. I use it a lot and if I can get that to work and when they get a driver form my X-FI SoundBlaster card, my main computer will become Linux too!.

I like to use Coral photo Album and Paint Shop Pro also. Is there good programs like that for Linux? The only other thing is my other printer is a Dell printer and that would have to be replaced too. It is a shame because it really is a great printer for photos and everything else. That printer is a Dell Photo 964.

Another very satisfied Linux user that has one machine Windows free and working great. :)

I don't know about Coral Photo Album, but you should have Gimp installed by default, ( look in Applications>Graphics ) which is, for digital photo work, pretty well the equal of any paid for software. It does take a bit of getting used to though, but no worse than changing from one application to another usually is. If you're using the KDE desktop you could look at Krita. I only heard about it myself recently, and it may not be in the FC6 repositories, in which case you'll need to compile it yourself, but it looks very promising, and perhaps closer to a Linux equivalent of Photoshop. Hope this helps.

Hmmm. Getting in both ways, to both versions! BTW, I notice on the new version, the EULA is on the web page. DOes it also require agreement on install?

Thanks for the replys everyone :)
When I check my install of Java at their site it says I have the latest version installed, 1.5.09
When it does show up for version 10, do you need to uninstall version 9 first? If so how do you?

When I installed Java it said you need the downloaded file in your user file. How can you download to a restricted file from Mozilla? I saved it to may desktop, then I did sudo nautilus to move it to the user file, then I installed it. I did not use the terminal, I just made sure it was exucatable file from permissions and then let the package installer do it from there. Then I used the terminal to add the lines the instuctions said.

I am having probles trying to understand when it says to browse to the directory from the terminal. How is that done anyway? How do you cd as well? I try and it always says file is not located or no such directory. I have tried su -, and su and just as a user and no luck. I need to learn this to help with further installs of things I come across that I would like. Also I know I read somewhere on how to have yum update daily. I can not find that thread now, does anyone know the command for that?

Thanks for all the help. Oh yeah another thing too. When I run Beryl, my screensaver does not work. Any reasons why?

OK I found the guide for yum updates. I get this error when I do this

su -c 'yum update'

--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Missing Dependency: madwifi = 0.9.2-1.lvn6 is needed by package madwifi-devel
Error: Missing Dependency: madwifi-kmod-common >= 0.9.2 is needed by package kmod-madwifi

And when I do this I get the following error as well

su -c '/sbin/chkconfig --level 345 yum on; /sbin/service yum start'

error reading information on service yum: No such file or directory
yum: unrecognized service

What do I do to fix these dependency problems?
Any help on my previous post is greatly appreciatted as well.

Well, your yum.conf matches mine so that's fine. However, one thing I see is that you have both livna and freshrpms listed under your yum.repos.d . That too is fine, but if BOTH are enabled ('enabled=1') then you can have version conflicts. So, choose either livna or freshrpms for your normal updates and stick with it. Change the other one to 'enabled=0' and again test for updates.

Snoopy1966
2006-12-04, 07:37 AM CST
OK thanks for the reply.
How do I change freshrpms to 0. Do I do this?
gedit cat /etc/yum.conf
and then save the file?
Trying to learn as much as I can, still pretty new to all this but I am learning fast. At first when I installed FC6 with dual boot, I thought I could not handle Linux. But by reading and trying things out I have learned a little of what to to and NOT what to do :), like mess with the video driver :) Some of the stuff is a little over my head right now, but I think it will all come in due time. I am very happy withe the progress I made with Fedora as the only OS for this computer. It is really very nice to use.

bob

Actually, it's very easy. Open a terminal and sign in as root (su -), password and then:

gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/freshrpms.repo

Make your change and then save and exit the file and 'exit' root - done!

Cool that worked. Now it says no updates when I do yum update. I think the new Madwifi is a development anyway.
I still get this error though
su -c '/sbin/chkconfig --level 345 yum on; /sbin/service yum start'
Password:
error reading information on service yum: No such file or directory
yum: unrecognized service
No big deal for now, at least I can do yum update and it will work now

techmatt
2006-12-04, 10:15 AM CST
for yum updates you could right a simple script (test file that is exicutible)

yum -y update

then

chmod 707 (file name)
this will make it excutable I think could just set the permissions in the file browser of your choice

then set up a cron job for that script
I have don this and it works fine

to setup the cron job I would use kcron it has a very good interface installed by
yum install kcron

then as root run kcron
set up under root for what ever times and days you want

Welcome to Linux and glad you are having fun

Snoopy1966
2006-12-04, 04:11 PM CST
Thanks for the reply. I did yum -y update and it updated 17 things. I tried the yum install kcron and it did not find the package. I looked in the Package Manager and did a search for kcron and it came up with kdeadmin. It says kcron in the package details. Should I install it witht the package Manager?

I do not understand what to do with this though

then

chmod 707 (file name)
this will make it excutable I think could just set the permissions in the file browser of your choicethen

chmod 707 (file name)
this will make it excutable I think could just set the permissions in the file browser of your choice

How do I set up file permissions for Mozilla FireFox? What is the difference of yum update and yum -y update?

techmatt
2006-12-05, 05:15 AM CST
yes the kdeadmin should be it I just forgot the name of the package, sorry

the -y means yes to every thing

in Linux inorder to run a script you need to set the exicutible permission (not in firefox but in nautilus or Konqueror if in KDE) just right click the file goto properties and there should be an exicutible setting

as root
run kcron
when it comes up select root then tast under root
then click create new task
set the time, day, and month
if you want it to run every day I think there is a button for that
you will have to put a line in like this

sh /(path to file)
