View Full Version : FC6 hangs at first boot. Kernel problem?

Greetings.
I tried to install FC6 on my PC and installation works perfectly but distro hangs at first boot.
There are no error messages and I couldn't identify the service that causes this situation because stops seems to occur in this service or in that one aleatory. If no service is loaded, FC6 starts perfectly but obviously without some features.
This problem isnīt new. It appeared also in FC5 when booting with 2.6.17 kernels but then system always hangs after "starting Avahi daemon" message.
What can I do to resolve this problem?
Thank you very much and excuse me for my bad English. ;)

Only a suggestion, but start up without any services. See if you can start yum. Do a yum update and see if that helps.

Hi, u-noneinc-s. Thank you for your quick response.
I can start yum. I used it to install yum-extender and works fine but when I was working with yumex a yum error appeared and I had to close the program.
I'll try to make a yum update from the console terminal like you suggest me.
Thank you again.

Also, have you tried pressing I during starting services and see which one(s) are causing problems.
I didn't mention this before since you have had experience with FC5, but maybe I should have ;)
If it's the same problem on the same PC with FC5 and FC6, it could be a kernel argument needed too. I'm sure someone else will suggest one. (There is a similar thread with the system hanging after udev). I think it was suggested noacpi, but not sure.

Hi, u-noneinc-s.
I made a system update but problem remained.
I made a custom installation without unnecessary services but I hadn't tried to disable services one by one at startup like you say. I made it now and found the service that causes system to stop is "irqbalance". If I disable this service FC6 starts and works perfectly.
Thank you very much for your help. ;)

I asked a friend about irqbalance recently as I was plying around with services trying to discover what I might really need or not need but I don't remember what he said about it. But I do know he said I didn't need it ;)
Glad to be of some help.

I read some notes about it.
I understand that the purpose of irqbalance is to distribute system interruptions across processors on a multi-processor environment in order to increase performance.
Well, I think I can disable it. If I have any problem I will come back here to post about it. ;)
See you.

My Problem (this was a problem in FC5 as well) was the file /etc/udev/rules.d/60-pcmcia.rules -- just delete the file, or move it out of that folder (mv /etc/udev/rules.d/60-pcmcia.rules /root)... You may have to boot up on the installation CD / DVD in rescue mode, and let it mount your system for you... then...
#I think this is right, check to see where your filesystem was mounted first!
chroot /mnt/sysimage
mv /etc/udev/rules.d/60-pcmcia.rules /root
Then reboot, and all should be well.
Hope This Helps!
