What is the 'drirc fix'? I'm having trouble getting OpenGL to NOT use the mesa drivers. Any ideas?

It's used if AIGLX works but you're getting screen corruption (such as part of your screen getting cut off). the actual fix can be found on page 40 of Firewing's Compiz how-to.

Comments: Hibernates correctly with Suspend2 (which includes patching the Kernel), haven't managed to get suspend to ram working correctly though; Battery drains a bit too quickly. AIGLX worked and configured easily with Compiz and Beryl although it crashes sometimes when using Firefox or Opera (I suspect it is because of Flash). I don't remember anything else, if I do, I'll post later.

Comments: This laptop works perfectly well with Fedora. (I have upgraded the RAM to 1.25 gigs though. The original 256 was just not enough. 512mb and over is a must). Just installed FC6 and everything works, the new window effects work very well. No problems so far.
Suspend almost works, it resumes but then the screen goes blank after a few seconds. I am currnetly looking for a fix

Display:1920x1200
Comments: Fresh install used "radeon" x11 driver and AIGLX and Compiz worked as advertised. It was actually rather cute. But other 3D/OpenGL apps didn't want to work like the xscreensaver stuff. Switched to ATI driver and all works well. Hibernate works better under ATI driver. Some connected USB devices cause hibernate and shutdown to be flaky. (Seems the OS doesn't know how to shut them down or something, removing them prior to shut down works fine though.)

Comments: wireless works with ndiswrapper beautifully. couldn't make it with native braodcom driver which comes with FC6. Still have some issues with figuring out the right driver for graphic card. wasn't able to enable Hardware acceleration. Also suspend doesn't work under fc5/fc6. at least i couldn't figure it out. Everything else works fine including FC6 desktop effects.

Comments acpi does not seam to work get a no device at boot this did work fine with FC5. Getting the broadcom working was a little tricky but was able to get it up using native bcm43xx support for Broadcom BCM4318. No desktop effects in FC6 think that is because of only having 256MB of ram. Also using a USB mouse with no problems at all.

Comments: GFX works well with nvidia's drivers. Suspend gets stuck on "black screen". Touchpad has very annoying issue with unwanted mouse-clicks, but can be disabled with xorg change. WiFi with ipw2200 drivers is very erratic- worked better in fc5. Other than that everything works perfectly!

Comments: So far everything has worked great. Still no effects, but that's because the 'radeon' drivers don't work with the X1400 and 'fglrx' doesn't have AIXGL support yet. Suspend to disk can be touchy (try to suspend and just put me right back to the desktop), but usually it works just fine.

Comments:

WIFI: This model laptop has no expansion slots which is a shame since the wireless card doesn't work well. I have not been able to get any native Linux drivers to work with the system. NDISWRAPPER works but the card is only able to establish a connection with a secure network. This is a known problem with this card.

SOUND: The sound system works but has a number of problems, the worst being that the sound is very quiet compared to what it would be in windows. The built in speakers are Altec Lansing and the sound card is: Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01). After resuming from hibernation or suspend the sound system doesn't restore. I've created a fix for it which I've posted here: http://www.securemind.org/v4/?p=8 .

I've created a Linux-Laptop.org page here: http://www.securemind.org/Linux_For_Laptops/C300-FC6ZOD-LinforLap.html

This was a BestBuy Special that I picked up a week ago for 399$ so for what does work, it was well worth it.

Comments: running custom built kernel from cvs at oss.sgi.com, config as close to fedora as possible.
Problems:
1. gnome-power-manager does not work with "Ask me" mode for power button,
goes to shutdown instead
2. suspend, hibernate, lid open/closure do not work correctly.
3. until now didn't setup bioapi to do authentication, sample application works correctly.
4. didn't try ATI proprietary drivers yet.

Hello!

Model: IBM Thinkpad T42
Videocard: Radeon Mobility 9600 - 64MB
Network: 1GB Ethernet Intel 82540EP
Wifi: IBM a/b/g (Atheros 5212) (not tested)
Bluetooth: iogear dongle (not tested)
Webcam: none
Touchpad: Synaptics
Hotkey (Home, Eject, Suspend ...): Thinklight, volume - all work out of the box with tpb onscreen
Display: 15.1" 1400x1050 Flexview sxga+
OS: FC6 (of course)
Kernel: 2.6.18-1.2849.fc6
Suspend on Disk: --
Suspend on RAM: works!
Comments:

- CPU scaling works out of the box (I keep it "on demand")
- Suspend on RAM only works with extra kernel parameter in grub.conf: acpi_sleep=s3_bios
- wifi not tested on FC6 yet - worked very well in FC5 (WEP only - never tested WPA)
- Think buttons work out of the box
- XGL works out of the box
- Currently use the stock "radeon" drivers - better overall performance than ATI proprietary drivers (this isn't a gaming rig - but it could be! :) )
- Dual booting using F12 on startup to select drive & OS (XP/FC6). FC6 on drive in the belly of machine, XP in a separate drive in ultrabay (swap out the cdrom to use XP - doesn't happen often).
- haven't tried other goodies like digital cams, webcams

** update **: tested wifi - works without a problem. Using madwifi & kmod from livna, NetworkManager ... connect either no encryption, WEP (64, 128), & WPA (tpik) with no problems. Wifi hardware indicator light also works!

Works great. Took a little bit of doing to get the ATI fglrx drivers working, but everything runs fantastic with the exception of wifi...
On occassion, when I boot I sometimes get a __tmp interface instead of eth1 for the wifi card. I have to reboot until I get a eth1 for the interface in order for wifi to work (like I said this is on occassion). It was AWFUL when I first installed FC6, but it has gotten better.

wireless works well with firmware cut from acer ferrari broadcom 64-bit drivers.... recognized the card right away, all i had to do was copy the firmware into /lib/firmware
sound recognized immediately, though it thought my dial-up was a second sound card. haven't tested whether or not it works for dialup
everything seems to work fine, with no problems whatsoever.

I have run Fedora on 2 laptops, so I'll list both.

My current laptop:
Model: Toshiba Satellite 2455-S3001
Videocard: nVidia GeForce 4 420 Go; Livna's nVidia driver works after disabling the external monitor and TV out in xorg.conf with Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT,TV"
Ethernet: Realtek 8139; works out of the box
Wifi: Came with an Agere Hermes 802.11b card that worked out-of-the-box with the hermes and orinoco modules.
Upgraded to the Atheros 802.11a/b/g minipci card from my previous laptop; works with the Livna driver
Bluetooth: I don't have any Bluetooth equipment to test this with. Linux's Bluetooth software says I have it, though.
Touchpad: Synaptics, needs Option "SHMConfig" in its section in the xorg.conf file to enable gsynaptics/ksynaptics/qsynaptics
Hotkey (Home, Eject, Suspend ...): With FnFx and the Toshiba ACPI driver, the Fn+key shortcuts work perfectly and are fully programmable. The play, stop, fast forward, and rewind buttons on the front work if they are enabled by the hardware (by holding MODE on the front for 5 seconds until the light comes on) (I think this is to prevent hitting them accidentally)
Display: Brightness controls work with the toshiba-acpi kernel module loaded
OS: Fedora all the way! NO OTHER OSes!! I don't need Windows at all.
Kernel: The one included with Fedora
Suspend on Disk: I can't get it to work!
Suspend on RAM: Works very well--sometimes resetting the display with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then Ctrl+Alt+F7 is required, though, due to bugs in the nVidia driver.
Comments: Everything works well on this laptop except the SD card reader. From what I've read, lspci -n says it's SDHCI.

My now-broken laptop:
Model: Toshiba Satellite A65-S126
Videocard: ATI Mobility Radeon 7000; worked out-of-the-box with hardware OpenGL using the open-source drivers included with the kernel and Xorg 6.x/7.x
Network: Realtek 8139, works out of the box
Wifi: Atheros 802.11a/b/g, worked with the Livna driver
Bluetooth: Not supported by the hardware
Touchpad: Synaptics, needs Option "SHMConfig" in its section in the xorg.conf file to enable gsynaptics/ksynaptics/qsynaptics
Hotkey (Home, Eject, Suspend ...): Didn't work at all!
Display: I couldn't even change the screen brightness without going into the BIOS setup routine on boot!
OS: Fedora all the way! NO OTHER OSes!! I don't need Windows at all.
Kernel: The one included with Fedora
Suspend on Disk: Didn't work at all
Suspend on RAM: Suspend to RAM just froze the computer on resume.
Comments: Decent machine, a few quirks, but still decent nonetheless. From what I've read from Windows users' reviews of this machine, I got much better performance out of it than they did. :D

It broke because I had CompUSA fix the volume dial--not only did they not fix it, but it came back with broken hinges, and they made me sign an agreement not to sue them if they broke it worse before I could even SEE the laptop! I had to use a chain, brass rods, brass hinges, and lots of tape to keep the thing together after that, and it finally gave up in October, 10 months after they broke the hinges.

Suspend on Disk: sometimes (issues with certain kernels and x700 drivers)
Suspend on RAM: sometimes (issues with certain kernels and x700 drivers)
Comments:
- at installation time, no graphics driver (neither ati, nor vesa) will detect the lcd display so it stays blank, tried attaching an external monitor and then it would work. consequence: text-mode install :(
- xorg-ati drivers and aiglx trigger a nice crash after a few minutes (harddisk journal check tells something like "write time lies in the future" which may or may not be the reason for this), fglrx is the only way to go for now
- kernel-param: combined_mode=libata needed or cd/dvd-drive will not use dma (and be damn slow)
- kernel-param: pci=assign-busses needed, or latest 2.6.18 will put a lot of (especially acpi) errors, warnings, etc.
- robustness and transfer-rates of sky2 network driver (for the marvell chip) are not so great
- the six hotkeys have never ever been working, fn-keys are a nogo, fnfxd will output at start something like this:

FnFX Daemon v0.3 (c) 2003, 2004 Timo Hoenig <thoenig@nouse.net>

fatal error: Could open /proc/acpi/toshiba/keys.

Please make sure that your kernel has enabled the Toshiba option in the ACPI section.
For more information read the documentation and/or http://fnfx.sf.net/index.php?section=doc#kernel.

there are some more minor problems, but all in all this laptop works quite well with fedora core 6 considering the fact that it has a "designed for windows xp" sticker

Comments: need to pass the all-generic-ide parameter to boot line in order to allow the kernel to find the hard-disk, due to a bug in the SB600 contoller already solved in kernel-dev (2.6.20). Wireless is not recognised by the bcm43xx driver, must use ndiswrapper with the Dell-provided WXP64 drivers, working flawlessly, with even led and fn-key working. Video card is 2D only with the radeon driver, fglrx enables direct rendering, but it's sluggish and Xv crashes. Kernel log spits out a lot of APIC errors on cpu1, ACPI seems to be working well anyway. Audio working out of the box, modem not seen.

Pretty new hardware, need to wait some kernel releases for better support...

I have two Fedora-powered laptops, the older one with FC4, the new one with FC6_64

Model: HP Compaq nx9010 (Mobile Pentium 4)
Videocard: ATi Radeon IGP345M (works OK, with open Radeon drivers)
Network: National Semiconductors MacPhyter DP83815 (no problem with this one)
Wifi: N/A
Bluetooth: N/A
Webcam: N/A
Touchpad: Synaptics (works OK, tuned with GSynaptics, it's disabled when you plug an external PS/2 mouse)
Hotkey (Home, Eject, Suspend ...): Need kernel module (omnibook) and LOTS of config files edit. After that, everything works OK
Display: XGA LCD panel (1024x768), works OK, VGA-out works (make sure to plug your monitor AFTER X is loaded, otherwise the LCD panel will shutdown), TV hotkeys don't work, TV-out does not work with Radeon drivers, but needs VESA driver or console mode. Tried with GATOS patches, no luck :(
OS: Fedora Core 4 / Windows XP SP2
Kernel: Homebrew 2.6.18.2
Suspend on Disk: Works with homebrew kernel, does not resume with stock FC4 kernels
Suspend on RAM: DOES NOT WORK WITH ANY KERNEL!
Comments: Using LIRC for manage this box with my TV remote. Also have a Canon BJC-250 parallel-port printer, does work OK. Starbridge DSL 305EU modem does freeze machine when it's plugged via USB while you're running Fedora (tried with custom and stock kernels).

Model: Dell Inspiron 6400 (Core 2 Duo)
Videocard: ATi Mobility Radeon X1400 (using propietary FGLRX driver, had to disable AIGLX for get DRI working, will crash X if you load "extmod" module and try to use any Xv-based video player). VGA out not tested, TV-out works if you restart X.
Network: Broadcom BCM4400 (?), works OK.
Wifi: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG. Works after installing drivers from Livna, WPA/WEP untested, minor issues with KNetworkManager, but "iwconfig/ifup" dance are enough to make a connection.
Bluetooth: Broadcom USB-something, is recognized, but it's untested.
Webcam: N/A
Touchpad: Synaptics (works OK)
Hotkey (Home, Eject, Suspend ...): Works. No need to load special drivers, not all keys were tested.

I haven't been on Fedoraforum for a while, but I read Fedora People, and this thread was mentioned in a blog posting by Luya Tshimbalanga. So here's my laptop:

Model: Asus S5200A, Pentium M 740, 512MB, 60GB
Videocard: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04)
Network: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
Wifi: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (rev 05)
Bluetooth: none
Webcam: none
Touchpad: Synaptics Touchpad
Hotkey (Home, Eject, Suspend ...): At least some of them work (display brightness, display on/off..., others I don't really use and haven't even tried to configure)
Display: 12.1" 1024x768
OS: Fedora Core 6
Kernel: 2.6.18-1.2849_1.fc6.cubbi_suspend2
Suspend on Disk: Suspend2 works great with cubbi's suspend2 kernels from http://mhensler.de/swsusp/index_en.php Some kernels (like the newest one) have problems, however, but at least this kernel I'm running now, works.
Suspend on RAM: Does not work. Suspends, but the display stays black after wake up.
Comments: Great, small laptop, pretty much everything just works on Linux. Intel for the win ;) I haven't tested the memory card reader or firewire, but they should work too, they're detected by the kernel. The only problem with this laptop is with processor cooling. The fan is too small and too noisy, I've had this machine for less than a year and the fan should propably be replaced soon  Still, it has great battery life, it's small, light, good looking, nice to work with.

Comments:
Very nice laptop for linux, no real issues for me (3~4 years of constant use and abuse, one replaced mobo in this time). I have successfully used a few different PC cards. The firewire port works, I'm using it for an external LACIE harddrive and an "Audio IO breakout box". The open source radeon driver supports direct rendering, but I could probably get better performance with ATI's closed one. The only grief I have is not being able to use the TV-out port to watch movies (at least not with my current setup). BTW, CD burner works very well, no coasters produced.

However, if I were to buy a new laptop today (which I am) I'd probably go for an nvidia (because of 3D performance and linux support) or an intel (because of openness) graphics chip.

The HDAPS (HardDrive Active Protection System), does't work. But the Accelerometer, does work, and very nicely. Just load "hdaps" module with modprobe, and you will have a joystick device, that response to tilt of your thinkpad.
Trackpoint works well enough, but the press functions doesn't work. It is supposed to work echoing 1 to a file in /sys. but I can't get it work.
Firmware for the wireless card has to be yumed from livna.
To be able to configure the touchpad, you have to put a line in Xorg.conf

Suspend on Disk:Only tested with nvidia driver 9746. Works great after passing agp=off in grub, adding Option "NvAgp" "1" in section screen in xorg.conf, and commenting the line /usr/bin/vbetool post in /etc/pm/functions-nvidia.
Suspend on RAM:Only tested with nvidia driver 9746. Works great.
Webcam: Works with spca5xx driver.
Comments: Speedstep works after compiling a new kernel...(also required for hotkey, bluetooth). The pen was easy to get working by modifying xorg.conf and adding the setserial command to /etc/rc.local. Enabling x86 specific bootfixes, got the reboot working.

I think fedora should provide a special laptop kernel that has all possible latest patches for laptops, and everything enabled to make every laptop work flawlessly. That is the biggest problem faced when trying to run fedora on a laptop. This would be totally impossible for the inexperienced linux user to fix.

Comments: It's amazing to me that this older laptop (circa 2000) works at all, let alone with Linux, considering that it's designed specifically for Windows.
The PCTel HSP MicroModem (internal) doesn't work, even with proper drivers, but it's a WinModem, so I didn't expect it to work.
External modems have worked just fine.
I used NDISwrapper, as the Broadcom 43xx drivers didn't work, which was a surprise, as the Linksys card has the Broadcom 43xx chipset. I am now using D-Link WNA-2330, which I highly recommend.
The Trident Cyberblade driver has never worked, making this poor lappy slower than it already is. This was also a disappointment, but the Vesa driver works fine, if slow.
Needless to say that this is not a game machine.

Acer Aspire 3610
All drivers worked on FC6 EXCEPT (In order of priority for me):

Broadcom 4318 wireless...installed the fwcutter method and it works but the stability is still a bit quirky and this is acknowledged by the driver maintainers. Hopefully this changes.

Dual-Head. Even though the gui says is working and configured, a crt monitor never displays anything when plugged in.

Bluetooth...not sure how to test it...the daemons start but I can never get any detection of a device.

wtogami (Warren Togami) suggested to use it for better report of user hardware specification. I created a new topic (http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=739837) to reflect the change.

Please people, use smolt to report your systems; it was designed for this purpose, and helps the Fedora Project much more directly. :)

Work laptop (dual booting WinXP)

Dell D600, Pentium M 1.8Ghz, 512 RAM.
ATI Fire9000GL graphics - works with 'radeon' driver but no dice with ATI drivers, livna or otherwise. No desktop effects. May have also had to tweak kernel parameters (no rhgb etc.) to get it to work in the first place but can't remember....
OS: Fedora Core 6, kernel 2869 (2895 seems to panic ndiswrapper!!!).
Suspend works like a charm.

The sticky bits:

- Truemobile 1450 Wireless - working w/ ndiswrapper from livna, with kernel 2895 causes kernel panics which disables the keyboard?!?! (but mouse remains fine!!).
- Had to manually change xorg parameters for touchpad to become usable (slow as ---- out of the box).
- Haven't tried external monitor or winmodem.
- The video card (ATI) does NOT play nice, though it does work with the radeon driver (slow as molasses, no desktop effects aargh)
- CPUspeed seems borked (doesn't throttle up) but cpufreq_ondemand seems fine

Verdict:
It works OK after some serious tweaking by a moderately experienced FC desktop user
DO NOT TOUCH WITH A STICK if you're thinking of buying it as a Fedora machine, too much work compared to some other comparable spec laptops.

btw read evil rumours that ubuntu works out of the box with this!!! (but I just can't imagine going without su LOL)

None off the special function keys work witch don't really mather that mutch sine I hardly ever use them and none off the led indicators eather.

A biger problem is that when I upgraded from fc4 to fc6 I can no longer load the desktop.

The screan turn blank and if I try to type startx + reselution I just get error mesages.

I gues it don't mather that mutch sine FC is turning my asus wireless into a lan card and my Marvell Yukon lan into wireless and I can't get online annyway.

Comments: This box runs Fedora 7 flawlessly. I needed very little additional configuration. The display came up perfectly, wired internet was there, wireless works perfectly, cd's and dvd's play although there is no sound yet. Other than the sound issues F7 is a real winner on this computer! This is pretty sweet! Oh, installed Beryl because I could. Installed without a hitch and works perfectly!

Edit: 9.28.07.
Had occasion to close the lid on the laptop with Fedora 7 running. Is that suspend? Anyhow, now 6 hours later I finally get home and have a chance to open lid to play with toy laptop. Fedora came right back up! Perfecto! Wireless network came right back automatically. The wireless USB mouse even worked when I plugged it back in. Nice! So what'd I do. Put the computer into suspend or sleep? What?

After suspend/resume, sometimes re-pairing mouse works, sometimes device hci0 has completely disappeared and hcitool scan reports no route to host, hidd --scan reports no device.

Have also experienced "hard lockups", can't even Ctrl-Alt-F1 to a text console, have to power cycle (infrequent). Any word on Bluetooth mouse workaround will be appreciated.

I think in addition, for the sake of simplicity, (and accuracy) smolt should be used for reporting purposes.

Although, check your results carefully after they are submitted. I have seen errors. <....>

Comments:

General: F7 is really great! Everything seems to be working, install (update actually) went smooth. Graphics and GUI stuff is also great. Yum is faster.

Video: the i810 driver works well as usual BUT I wasn't able to suspend and use an external monitor with it since FC5. I read that there is an experimental (modesetting ??) driver for intel VGA called simply "intel". I tested it and these 2 issues worked: suspend and external monitor. However I think that it is slower than the i810 - noticeable with Compiz. I also read about a (development) driver i810-modesetting. I wasn't able to find it and test it. Does anyone know more about this? It would be great if there is a combination of the speed of "i810" and the suspend/external VGA qualities of "intel".

WiFi: ipw2100 was always working for me. However I once updated my FC6 and got a buggy version of the driver. It would occasionally disconnect my wireless and dmesg would say

ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth1: link is not ready
This happend once since I updated to F7. I had to turn Wireless off from the hardware switch, reinsert the ipw2100 module and wait a little until I could again use it. Don't know what caused it except that it was some heavy traffic. I hope an update of the driver will be available soon.

Tip: Use powertop (http://www.linuxpowertop.org/powertop.php) to optimize your battery usage. The i8042 driver (PS/2 - touchpad) is the evil power beast in my system, but I don't think there could be a workaround...

I am utterly annoyed and approaching angry with ATI for their policies and lack of concern for their customer's interests. nVidia is better... but only by a little. But even so, they are WAY more responsive to Linux users than ATI is and nVidia's policy on 'legacy' hardware is far better. I encourage any ATI user with the option to move to nVidia to vote with your dollars as I have. ATI will not listen to anything else.

This laptop is of a cousin and works OK overall, in fact I am really surprised (and jealous) because Desktop Effects work out of the box. If was pretty cheap because it supposedly had Linpus Linux instead of Windows XP, besides it budget nature. However, to my surprise it was loaded with a pirate copy of Windows XP (it was properly packaged so I think this is an Acer's failure), I was upset to find this (replacing a Linux with a pirate Windows) but calmed my self when realized the machine had an Intel Celeron M 430 @1.73GHz instead of the advertised 1.6GHz model, and a 80GB HD instead of the 60GB advertised.
Had to add the 'noapic' parameter to the kernel in order to boot F7.

Hello,

I was wondering if someone could help me out. I am running fedora 7 and I regeistered my PC with Vista before nuking my hard drive and putting fedora on it. The internet components were working fine with the microsoft product. But now am totally unable to access the internet through ethernet or wireless.

I have: Intel's pro/wireless 3495 card... can anyone help me out with this one?

Also, i have two switches on the front of this laptop that turn the wireless and bluetooth on and off, I think this may be the beginning of the problem...

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Now with fedora 7 it simply works without any additional affords. What do you observe during boot?
try as root:

iwconfig
and then:

system-config-network
Good luck

any more suggestions?

The switches on the front of your laptop are software switches that will only work in windows. They are not needed for Fedora. Are you running 32bit or 64bit Fedora? I am currently using both ethernet and wireless for Internet access. I am using the 64bit Fedora 7. Therefore I had to download 64 bit drivers for my Broadcom 4318 wireless card - used HP latest 64bit windows drivers although my laptop is an Acer and used ndiswrapper in order to use the windows drivers. You probably can do a search of this forum and find a step by step method for your Intel Wireless card. The ethernet connection was auto detected and configured (the cable must be connected when installing Fedora). The sound issue is probably that the audio output is defaulted to the headphone jack. You can check this by connecting a headset to the headphone jack. This can be changed in the preferences in the mixer. Bluetooth was automatically detected and configured. Things aren't as bad as they seem.

Hope this helps.

Comments: I am officially very happy with Fedora 7 now. I've been running fedora since FC5 on my desktop, but this my first try on a laptop. It was a real chore getting Fedora 7 up and running the way I want it, and I'm sure lesser souls would have given up long ago. I love it, but in terms of it "just working," there is still much progress to be made. I commend all the efforts so far, though. I'm really hoping linux will break out in a big way.

this entry simply is for the record, i'm still testing and searching for solutions.

graphics chip: runs in correct resolution (1440x1050) out of the box (big thumbs up to fedora  )

sometimes fedora won't shut down correctly (dark grey rectangles on the whole screen - a cold 4 second push buttun shutdown is needed).

WiFi: INPROCOMM IPN2220 (works through ndiswrapper)
Bluetooth: n/a
Webcam: n/a
Touchpad: Synaptics Touchpad - Not always responsive and mouse can go wild sometimes. Fine under XP. USB mouse works fine too.
Hotkey (Home, Eject, Suspend ...): Assignable although dedicated keys have odd behaviour sending too many messages perhaps? WiFi LED doesn't relate to WiFi state. Fn keys seem okay, although 'hard' keys for swapping to external display are untested. Brightness keys are fine. Volume works if keys are assigned.
Display: 1280x800 15.4" Widescreen. Works fine and brightness Fn keys work fine. External VGA and S-Video, and dual-screen are untested.
OS: Fedora 7 32bit
Kernel: 2.6.22.5-76.fc7 (i686)
Suspend to Disk: Doesn't resume. Blank screen, no keyboard response.
Suspend to Ram: Doesn't resume. Corrupt screen, no keyboard response.
Comments: Generally fine except WiFi takes a lot of effort to convince it to connect (can take half an hour! No problems in XP), and suspend doesn't work out of the box (trying various configs at the moment but nothing's working right).

Many input issues though. Touchpad is a bit weird, and under Gnome (haven't tried anything else though) key presses in any app often need to be repeated if typed to quickly else characters are lost (again, not a problem in XP). Sometimes the cursor can go nuts, or lots of spaces are injected into an edit box when window gets focus, caps stuck on just by using shift key normally. Mouse left click (using a USB mouse) can sometimes get stuck and Esc key can free it.

Recognises battery and charge state fine, display dims and battery state is recognised when unplugged though battery life is untested at this stage. CPU throttling between 1600Mhz and 800Mhz works fine (and appears to sticks at 800 on battery). Fan throttles too, although fan never turns off (although this has been observed in XP more recently. laptop old age? It used to turn off). Hard disc and CPU run cooler when idle in FC7 with Gnome + Beryl than in XP. Bluetooth not supplied with laptop (despite hotkey for it), but a USB Bluetooth dongle worked fine.

DVD writer trashed a +RW disc although the disc might have been the problem. Burnt a +R fine though.

Firewire untested at this stage.

I used FC3 a long time ago and thought it was alright so I decided to switch back. It was either this or OpenSUSE and I'm just not very impressed with them. Thanks Fedora!

Comments: Out of the box, Fedora Core 7 did not support nVidia graphics accelerator, Intel 3945ABG wireless or software control of brightness.
- Now, after a wait, Fedora Core 7 supports nVidia graphics acceleration. Thanks leigh123@linux: http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showpost.php?p=832177&postcount=2
- After a longer wait, it supports Intel 3945ABG. Thanks strikeforce: http://www.fedoraguide.info/index.php/Main_Page#Intel_IPW3945
- Still no software control of brightness. This aspect of Power Manager Brightness Applet and Power Manager doesn't work. (The brightness keys do work, however).
On a mean-spirited note, all three work out of the box in Ubuntu 7.10.

Comments: Fast clock bug requires no_timer_check parm with older 64-bit kernels (not needed with 2.6.23). Don't waste your time trying to get a 32-bit kernel working. Texas Instruments SD/MMC card reader and Broadcom wireless not working, yet. Standard nv driver supports native resolution. Use legacy NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-96.43.01-pkg2.run for accelerated graphics. Even though only 15.4" have to use 120 DPI for text to be readable. Movies look incredible at 1680x1050, however.

I am using the nvidia driver - desktop effects work nicely. Bluetooth connects with my phone easily and is much improved.
Fn buttons have never worked even in earlier versions - I use smartdimmer to change screen brightness.
Suspend and hibernate did not work initially and I got a blank screen with a mouse pointer when I revived after suspend or hibernate. I could log in from another machine and restart X. Yesterday I updated "irqbalance" and both have started working perfectly. I suspect this may have been the problem but I am not sure.

Comments:

The asus F8 series is a beautiful computer and has the right size (14 inches screen). The laptop has nome of the nicest plastics I've ever seen on a laptop and I think they help keeping the temperature down. It is also very silent. The keyboard is great with only one down side: The position of the Fn key which is right where my old laptop had the ctrl key. I guess I'll have to get used to it.
For me the biggest downside of this laptop is the screen which reflects too much and there is a great image quality variation with small angle changes - I've found myself moving on the chair unable to get the right angle several times.

Linux wise I would recommend an F8sv which has an nvidia card and probably works better. I wanted to get the sv but they didn't have it in stock and in one week I'm off to college. I'm lost with the radeon hd 2600 card, I thought that aiglx was supported with the latest fglrx but I guess not. I have pretty much given up the card and I'm waiting for new drivers.
Another downside of the F8's on linux is the webcam support. I was anxious to talk to my girlfriend over the 1.3mp web cam but it doesn't work on linux, at least with gspca. There are posts on the ubuntu forums about an Asus G series' webcam working with uvcvideo but I haven't tried it because:
a) I can't figure out the webcam model lspci, lsusb give me nothing.
b) I have to compile uvcvideo and I don't feel like compiling each time there is a new kernel. Maybe some good soul would put these on livna :D

There is also the fingerprint thingy which off course doesn't work. I would like to have support for it on linux, not for security but for showing off :P - If you have physical access to a machine you have the machine, nevertheless logging in into gnome with your index finger (like they do in windows).

Comments: There is also a fingerprint reader and a smartcard reader on here. Neither work though I understand that under Ubuntu, the fingerprint reader will work so it's probably some kernel tweak or patch that can be applied. Further, I have a Novatel Wireless miniPCI card in this machine that works but isn't identified properly as a USB serial device automatically, so I added "/sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x413c product=0x8136" to my /etc/rc.local file... I don't know how to get it to install correctly, but this works fine. There are only 3 multimedia keys (Vol-up, Vol-down, Mute) and they work. The nVidia proprietary driver reports that the video device has 512MB RAM. It doesn't. It has 256MB of 64 bit access RAM. I'm not sure, but I think there's a difference in there somewhere.

Everything works great. I have not really messed with the ATI x1300 graphics. But hibernation and suspend work fine.

The only thing that annoys me is that it tries to make connection with wlan0 on powerup and that delays the boot process.

Comments: Don't bother with this laptop. Memory is capped at 2GB. Runs Fedora 8 quite well other than ATI card loves heat and you need to mess around with power optimization to achieve >1hr on battery. You need to map keys for additional use. Like switching on and off wireless, bluetooth, etc. But in the end, purchase something else. You will better off.

Comments: Definitely do not recommend this laptop for newbies, or really anyone :D, unless you're willing to put in some time to get things working. Once everything is working it's a pretty nice machine.

The ALSA version provided with F8 does not work, at least for me, had to use 1.0.14 from F7 to get audio.

* The nvidia driver requires a custom edid file to be exported from Windows Vista using something like Phoenix EDID Designer. Compiz works fine once you disable refresh rate detection and set it manually (to 60) in ccsm, also set Loose Binding.
UPDATE attached the edid.raw and xorg.conf files below

** Do not use the Vista Driver (bcmwl6) get a copy of bcmwl5.inf (and the 4 other files in the driver directory for WinXP) from Dell (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R174291&SystemID=WRK_NBK_PNT_P4_M4300&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=15680&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=5&fileid=236819) (an 89mb download unfortunately). This driver & card perform very well, giving stable connections in very weak signal areas, and also works fine with fedora's 4k stack kernel.

*** Just click on "Device" in the Configure dialog window, or select "Show my own video" from the right-click menu for the kopete taskbar icon. Video works with cheese, but quite slowly, and taking a photo causes an xwindows crash.

This is a pretty powerful laptop, Core 2 Duo T7250 @2.0GHz, 2GB Ram, 250GB SATA. The T7250 has Intel Virtualization Technology (vmx flag in /proc/cpuinfo) but must be enabled in the Bios. The GeForce 8600M allows a score of over 10000 in 3DMark03 (which makes it comparable to my desktop Radeon X800Pro)

The Default set-up can be adapted to multi-boot Linux and WinXP with Vista, but it's a little tricky, you need to delete the MediaDirect partition at the end of the drive (it can be restored later), shrink the ntfs OS partition using Vista's Disk Manager (by 100GB max), then resize the extended partition to fill the empty space, and install Fedora etc in this extended partition, putting grub in the /boot partition (not the mbr). Then use the freeware EasyBCD to add Grub location to the Vista bootloader. (This is easier than I make it sound)
(Detailed instructions (http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showpost.php?p=988686&postcount=5))

Note that F8 runs at near native speed in VirtualBox in Vista if you install guest additions and enable the use of Intel Virtualization Technology, so do that instead if you're scared to repartition, it's much simpler, similarly WinXP runs very fast in Fedora under virtualization (No Direct3D though, haven't tried Vista)

Comments: My hands are full getting all apps funtioning right. BT headphones from Toshiba do not work yet. Game controllers are sometimes good, other times not. Shutdown sequence hangs at system halted, then I must use the power button. Widgets for my gnome-control panal are excellent: System monitors, temperatures, cpu frequencies.

Kernel upgrade config-2.6.24.4-64.fc8 has in one way improved "Power Management". Suspend to RAM seems to be work well. However, another trouble has developed. Laptop turns off suddenly at unexpected times during operations. It seems to be related to <indicated?> discharge of the battery while on AC Power. I love all the software goodies that come with FC8 Packages, and will see through the difficulties through even if it risks a complete meltdown. I'm having fun! :)

Still so far I have been unable to compile a working kernel of my own. My current aim is simply to enable kernel modules for my own native toshiba hardware. Plenty of good information for compiling of the kernel with Fedora is available in these forums and I'm using it. :(

Upgrade in and around August 2008 left me cold! Hal Daemon broke. Others have reported similar problems with loss of network and sound. My solution was to reinstall (--oldpackage) hal-info. Other problems started - unexpected shutdowns and freezeups. I did my best with my modest ability level to juggle packages, trying to reconfigure my install, which was Fedora 8 - Games Spin, then the frozen Fedora 8 distro. Dudes...My system crashed bad. Partition table went away, I think. System would not boot even with a floppy. I harrowed the hard disk and re-installed again. Probably I should have Upgraded to Fedora 9 with the rest of the crowd, but for now I am a Debian "beastie", while I lick my wounds. See you all soon in Fedora 10 - I shall return!

Comments:I am astounded by the quality of f8. I was running fc6 suspend never worked and wireless worked but was flaky. After upgrade and update of the bios from http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5630.html most everything worked right out of the box. When I initially tried to boot the live cd I had to append xdriver=vesa to the kernel boot params to get a working display as the nvidia card and display in this machine does not detect properly. It booted fine in vesa mode, I then installed the binary driver and all was peachy.

Comments: Sound works, WiFi works with Linux drivers (I can't comment on WPA, don't use it) Waiting on the nVidia drivers for 3d, but everything else works fine. The function buttons mostly work (DVD controls, volume, brightness, eject all work, haven't tried the others.)

LightScribe works with the drivers from LightScribe.org, and the free version of Lacie Linux LightScribe burning software.

WiFi works with the Linux drivers - just remember to download the driver files -- read dmesg after the first boot and follow the comments there. Throughput seems to be as good as, if not better than, Vista Ultimate 64 that came with it (and promptly removed within 1 month!!!)

Had problems getting dvd::rip to work until I went manual and pulled source down from CPAN for all the modules it needed, it now works fine.

WebCam works under Cheese. Sound works just fine, haven't tried doing any recording yet, but all indications tell me it works.

Fedora 9 has worked very well so far - just waiting for the binary nVidia drivers. This version seems to be working very well so far on this laptop. This is the first version that I didn't have fits getting the wireless to work - I was actually shocked that it was easy this time!

Only thing I am not thrilled about is Firefox 3.0 beta. Found out the hard way that it doesn't support SSH2 (yeah, I know, insecure and all that stuff, but that is what both my router and my NAS gear uses. You get login errors but it still sorta works...)

Addendum - 10.12.2009
Although HP claims that this laptop will take only 2 Gb of DDR2 RAM, I have just put 2 2 Gig sticks in the laptop (for a total of 4 Gigabytes of RAM) and it works great! You can put 4 Gigabytes of RAM in the dv6451us laptop. I used HP memory that came from my other laptop (I replaced the 2 2G sticks in that one with 2 4G sticks, and on a whim decided to try it in the dv6451us laptop...and it worked just great!!! Vista is using it right now, as soon as I am done patching the OS, I'll yank the drive and put the Fedora 11-64 drive back in and test it, but if Windows is happy, I fully expect Linux to be overjoyed!

Comments: Everything is running really well. Only problem is the wireless. I have it installed and it sees all my wireless networks, but I cannot connect to any of them. Also noticed, for some reason internet is REALLY slow. I think this is a FC9 issue, because when i tried the 64-Bit on my desktop, I had the same problem.

Comments: I have to disable the touchpad as it's far to sensitive with Linux. Also disable power management to stop the machine diving into power saving mode, which appears to cause the mouse driver to go crazy. Erratic mouse pointer movement when the mouse is moved.

Comments:

Wifi-driver doesn't work out of the box. I used Ndiswrapper and the windowsdriver from Comaq. Now it runs like a charm...

I had to modify xorg.conf to make screenspanning work with an external (1440x900) monitor. Without modification it only wants to clone the display.

You need the firmware. I have exactly the same wlan adapter and it works like a charm without any need to use ndiswrapper. Just go to:
http://www.fedoraguide.info/index.php/Main_Page#Broadcom_b43_.28Method_1.29
and use fwcutter, then make sure you have the b43 firmware folder in /lib/firmware. You may need do disable (blacklist) the ndiswrapper module or uninstall it altogether.

Kamil

Shrunk existing Vista partition down, suspend works OK, wireless
fine, Network Manager annoying for not saving DNS settings (had
to manually edit /etc/sysconfig/networkscripts/wlan-whatever file),
touchpad works fine, extra USB mouse works fine, haven't tested
Bluetooth yet.

After a test boot of Vista aftewards, Linux no longer finished
boot until I added noacpi to the kernel flags, but it turns out
noapic will do just as well.

Here as a useful utility for controlling screen brightness on laptops:

http://code.google.com/p/gbacklight/

It is entirely written in C and the only dependencies are X and GTK.
