Fedora can run on computers with 4GB (or more) of RAM. Your lecturer is wrong.

Fedora, or any recent Linux kernel is capable of running on 4+Gb of memory. In fact, I recall recently Leigh was working a large memory issue with someone. As I recall, there was kind of a secret to getting that one solved. Don't remember it right off, so search around the forum a bit. :)
Regarding the Motherboard, you may want to show us the general direction of your thinking. A bit of demonstrated research on your part will go a long way toward inclining this old f*rt to help you! :)

Hi ,If he goes 64 bit AMD, Fedora x86_64 will support 64 gb (huge mem kernel)
The machine in question runs fine with 4Gb (dimm voltage needed upping )
This kernel info is a couple of years old. but should help prove your point.

Check this link for hardware details (I belive instability may have been caused by small power supply and would recommend aleast 600w min for this type of machine , And see no reason why it could not be increased to 8gb) check motherboard manufactures for full details
matalab is legendary for its memory useage ( dont skimp on swap memory )
